It seems that this is a pretty common way of going about it in many Japanese derived ma's. The idea is that a strike that would immobilize or at least stun you if done full contact without padding is acknowledged and taken as a reset point. My personal feeling is that we ought to go higher contact and make sure that's the case (stunning etc.) and if so those that want to continue in that manner should do so. I think it is obvious from sporting events in particular that you can be stunned and still protect yourself enough that you'll be able to continue fighting. There are enough other things that I like about my school and teacher that offset this disagreement though.
As a side note once when in Wastrel's guard he started popping me in the face. I changed position to avoid this and thanked him, the courtesy ingrained by TMA's <img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle>
