Hello all.

My posts usually get tossed in here anyway, so thought I'd save everyone the trouble and just toss myself in here.

Having said that, I'd like to throw two questions out there that people may or may not want to bother taking the time replying to...

1. Besides the traditional running on a treadmill or outdoors, are there any other endurance/cardio exercies that other fellow BJJ-ers recommend? I always thought my cardio was in "decent" shape, but apparently that notion has been quickly debunked by my BJJ classes. I had no idea these live rolling sessions could take so much out of you. Hell, screw the actual rolling sessions. I'm usually huffing and puffing like a mad man after the warm-up drills especially the "frog jump". Is that drill suppose to take so much out of you?

2. Is there a proper "name" you use to address your instructor? Like, if my instructor's name was don king, do i call him don... mr. king... almighty one... etc?

(B)if you are really out of shape , it can seem to kill you . If you are moderatley fit it should just be another part of warmig up .

1) You probably need more *anaerobic* work, not aerobic (cardio) -- to improve your strength and stamina when you roll.

2) Ask him. BJJ tends to be pretty informal.

Upa gave you your best advice. Roll more for more rolling stamina.


At a certain point you might want to do auxillary excersizes. For instance SPRINTS. They suck but the feeling of complete and total cardiovascular exhaustion will help. Lifting weights helps because being bigger and stronger helps when you have the skill behind it. Being in awesome physical shape is critical to competitiveness.


I call my instructor by thier first names. Always have. No Sifu, No Sensei, No Master, No Sir.

Cardio:
Rolling without a time limit is the best cardio I've ever had. Now that I'm at a BJJ school and there's no time limit I've seen a shocking upswing in my stamina. If your school does this your cardio is going to be drastically improved in a couple of months.

Some anecdotal observations from a crappler: When you are exhausted do not give in, keep going until someone taps. Not only will you find you have more in you than you thought, but pushing yourself beyond what you think you have will improve what you do have. When you have more experience you will start to panic less and use up less energy while rolling. Also, I have been advised by a brown belt to always, always breath through my nose because it's supposed to help. I have no evidence for this beside personal observation and his suggestion but he appears to be correct, it seems to help for some reason.


Etiquette:
Most schools have their own etiquette. At my old school the teacher liked to be called by title. At my BJJ school they insist on first names and I hear that this is the norm.

Rolling with time limits is actually equally important, provided you roll with urgency.
Rolling 3-5 minute rounds over and over with 30-60secs rest kills.

Rolling without timelimits teaches you to roll without time limits, that is conserve energy and roll more conservatively and reactively.

I guess I hadn't thought of that. The reason I think it makes such a difference is that my old place was rolling with 1 and 2 minute time limits when I left. The change in rules opened my eyes like a cattle prod.

Try plyometrics.
I do box jumps, squat thrusts, and star jumps. I also put the treadmill on a severe incline and go as fast as I can up hill for 2-3 minute stretches for about 20 minutes.

As far as what to call your instructor, mine says to call him coach. But I'd imagine each instructor is different.

i usually call my instructor andrew. fortunately, this is his name. sometimes i call him sensei, which is not his name, but he still answers to it, so that's ok.
