Our gym recently picked up a great judo instructor. He has been teaching takedowns and throws on monday nights as part of our bjj class. Popularity has risen to the point they decided to have him hold his own judo class on monday and wedsday nights after bjj class and mma class.

I normally have this schedule. Monday, Wedsday 1 hour bjj and 1 hour MMA class, tuesday and thursday 1 and 1/2 hour judo at my current club, friday 1 hour bjj and 1 hour open mat, saturday 2 hours MMA or open mat depending on who shows up.

My current judo club is about 30 minutes away from my house highway driving, so being able to take judo 10 minutes from my house would save me a lot of gas and tolls. Plus judo will be free to anyone already paying for the bjj and mma classes, so I would actually be saving about 110.00 every 3 months. The problem is that I get off work at 4:30, I have to be to bjj by 6:30, then if I do bjj, mma, and judo I won't get out of class until 9:30. Somewhere in there I need to eat. Usually I'm getting very low blood suger levels by 8:30. So I need to come up with a way to orginize my schedule to allow me to train judo and mma.

How would you deal with this schedule? Skip lunch and leave at 3 to cache dinner? Do bjj and MMA one day, on the other day do bjj, eat a snack and rest for an hour, then do judo?

How would I deal with it? I'd end up eating one of the lightweights. I need to eat every 3 hours to keep losing weight and keep my energy up.

I'd say don't skip lunch, have a small meal at 3 and then snack around 6 during class. Can't imagine there being anything wrong with bringing a shake, bar or one of those gel packs runners eat to your class.

Be mindful of over training too. good luck.

Yea, I could eat in class, I'm just hesitant to because I tend to get bad cramps if I eat near training time. I'll give it a try though, live and learn hehe.

It depends on what you eat. I used to get horrible stomach issues whenever I would eat close to training time, until I discovered those awesome gels that Powerbar makes. Experiment with different things and I'm sure you can find something to have as a snack during your workout (hell, even a bottle of gatorade would work in a pinch).

your daily schedule sounds similar to mine.

i take a lunch and fruits for snacks to work and eat more or less every 2 hours. just a small snack. i get off at 4.30 or 5, get to jj at 6.15, train until 9, and i eat dinner around 9.30 or 10. it's not so bad if you remember to eat during the day. i usually end up building up enough energy to last from 4 to 9.

I'll try both, I'll eat more often durring the day with fruits and such, and take a powerbar with me to eat between mma and judo if I need it.

I hope I can pull this off, this would give me tuesdays and thursdays free to do something else with all my training on monday, weds, friday, and saturday.

Eating in between training sessions can get complicated. Plus your risking over training.

Just do BJJ one night, Judo the next. ALternate between the two and save the MMA stuff for Saturday when you have open mat. Simple but effective.

That would be less training then I do now, and from past exp would not bring any skill gains due to a lack of focus on the training. Really, I wont be training any more then I do now, just instead of 2 hours one day 1 hour the next, its 3 hours one day, one day off, 3 more hours, etc.

I'd stick to 2-1-2-1 in that case. 3 hours is a big block and you can burn out easier than if you take it one step at a time.

Also, if you ever have to miss a day for some reason, you'll be able to train the next day. With 3-0-3-0, if you skip a day, you won't train until the day after next.

Another thing, you'll retain knowledge better if you go 2-1-2-1 since you won't have so much stuff to learn each day (whether you're doing new techniques, or just progressing in sparring). And, by the end you'll be tired as hell so you won't be as focused on learning as if you were fresh.

True, but the cash savings can't be overlooked. I would save 110.00 every 3 months, plus tolls (75 cents each way) and gas money (20-30 minute drive).

The new way would be one fee (the same I pay now for just bjj and mma), and have more students to randori with (right now my current judo class only has 4 adults and my bjj class always has at least 20-30 students most of which expressed a desire to train in judo), and have a younger instructor who is not so up tight on tradition and is willing to explore and modify things for MMA and bjj tourneys.

Another option is the nearby YMCA judo class, but they only meet once a week and there are tons of screaming kids in the class (Although the instructor is one of the most amzing judoka I know).

I'm not too worried about burning out, I'm more worried about blood suger levels. I think the best idea is to eat more often durring the day, and bring a energy bar with me to class. If that fails or I start to burn out I can adjust my training as needed. Its not like I can't go back to my old instructor. Plus I like the idea of having days off to spend with my wife and to heal. I've been nursing some injurys for a while now I need to rest.

I would take an odd MMA class off on Mon or Weds. Just alternate between the two. Kick back for an hour and maybe eat a snack, drink some gatoraide and chill. Then do the Judo there after when you would have done the MMA.

In addition I would skip thurs Judo at the other club to rest. 1 day off in the middle of the week total rest. No training. Go back to train fri and sat and have sunday off as well. They you can hit it hard M, T, W again.

That's just me though.

Well there is good news, it looks like I wasn't the only one who thought it was insane, so talk is in the works to make it monday/wedsday bjj and mma, friday bjj and judo, and saturday mma and judo.

This will work out great because it will cut the training time down to around 2 hours a night, 4 days a week.

Once this goes into effect I will be cutting out my judo training on tuesdays and thursdays (which allows me to save 110.00 every 3 months). So all my training will be in one club for one fee which is no higher then what I currently pay for bjj and mma.
