He visited the mma gym I train at claiming to be a seventh dan in systema?, His fitness was poor, his ground game very poor and couldnt punch his way out of a paper bag. Worst of all when applying his art to some ground and pound sparring he shouted "BASTARD" and rolled around in agony every time a blow connected. He had clearly come to the gym with the belief that his version of Systema works and came accross very arrogant. He was invited to come and train at the gym again and declined giving the excuse of work committments, which I found strange as we are both in the same job!!. not impressed

Uh, yeah... I know Paul from way back, before he was a Systemist. Very little of what you said has any ring of truth about it. I'm inclined to agree that your statement is most likely bullshit. Can you provide any evidence of what happened?

If you still know him, ask him yourself, like i said he attended the gym around may, and gave a poor account. perhaps systema is more aimed at eye gouging and groin strikes and so probably didnt stand up to well in mma.

All I know is that he certainly didnt react to body blows like he did in that richard gannon u tube clip and i was wearing 12 oz gloves.

Sorry if you think i insulted one of your friends but it was all true.

This thread should be closed, it's been confirmed repeatedly, in person, that Systema fucking sucks.

Okay, I asked Paul about the mma gym trip and he confirmed it did happen. In brief, his comments were:

* He was invited to the class by a friend that he'd grappled with. He went along because he was genuinely interested in trying out their training. He thinks his friend might have said something to the instructor, as Paul's impression was that the instructor thought he was there in order to 'try it on'. He wasn't.

* He was told clearly not to use 'any of that funny stuff' (finger locks, presure points and other non-mma stuff) in the class. As he was there to try out what they were doing anyway, he had no problem with that.

* His cardio wasn't great, and the class showed that up, particularly toward the end. He's now working on addressing it.

* He didn't do well in the boxing style training. Not a great surprise, he's not a boxer. Again, he wasn't doing Systema punching because he was there to try out their stuff, not to prove anything or to demonstrate his stuff.

* He never claimed to be a '7th Dan' in Systema - that would be meaningless in a Russian martial art that doesn't have grades.

* He did shout 'bastard' once, when he was caught with a belter to the head that knocked his gum shield out. He said this was just a reaction, like when you stub your toe, and not intended as an insult or complaint.

Overall, Paul said he enjoyed the class. He did notice that most people there were carrying injuries. I'd guess that would have made it less appealing to him to return.

Just finally an apology from me to Motty. Motty, your description sounded so unlike the Paul that I know (in terms of attitude and temperament), that I initially thought you were fibbing. Seems I was wrong and you weren't fibbing, even though your version of events and Paul's differ a bit.

anyone else besides maddog attend the systema UK seminar that just finished up this past weekend? would love to hear some feedback on it

The art was debunked, for me, when a guy from my club choked out a certified Systema instructor, repeatedly, and when every guy who came from the Systema club to ours either sucked, or had previous experience in other MA previous to systema and only used that. Systema is marginally more useful than nothing at all.
