Good call Rev Fist, I am interested in trying some Aikido which I do practice, against skilled opponents but I am enrolling in BJJ this week. I will come to the throwdown if just to watch.

hey, i'm a student coming into NYC at the end of august for college. I'm at the New School which is right nearby NYU, and would love to find a crew to work out with. I'm a ridiculous hodge podge of stuff, mainly stuff I've picked up and learned from random people.

Hey Vinh,

What's your background?

like alot of kids, i originally started out with tkd... stopped doing that and just trained with a few guys picking stuff up. mostly just mma stuff.

alot of it was bjj, groundfighting. but i have no real formal training in bjj, just like i said, found a coupla guys who knew stuff and worked out with them and had them teach me some stuff.

Again, it seems you have a real interest in martial arts. You should find a BJJ or MMA school near you and then train at least for 18 months before putting yourself out there to compare with strangers.

These are just fake names on a message board agreeing to meet up and compare skills. You don't know if the other guy is big or small, trained or not, good or not. Obviously no one shows up thinking they're going to take some heavy shots. Everyone wants to give, not get.

But if you dabbled and the other guy trained regularly for 3 years you're most likely not in a position to compare. You're just going to be his punching bag.

Skill comes with time fostered by hardwork and discipline. A little bit of knowledge might be just enough to get you in a lot of trouble.

So... um... throwdown? For the summer? With pictures?

Also, Rev Fist, where you do train e-chuan? and is it taught as a standalone art, or in conjunction with other internal arts?

Perhaps it is not internal, either. Chuan just means fist. Maybe it is electronic fist?

I'd be down to roll with you guys. Sorry, but I don't train stand up yet. Is there still room for me?

There's room if everybody can agree on a time. I don't know what happened to radiator, but can we get some sort of roster together of people who are interested. Also, while I agree with Revolution Fist, in regards to his remark about the prudence of not knowing who you are showing up to roll or spar with, the spirit of these things isn't always about fighting. People can show up and train without having to beat the living **** out of each other. Or they can. Just be real clear before hand with people about what you are there for.

Frankly, I got beat down at the last one, but it was what I needed to have happen at the time. I had an unrealistic idea of what I was prepared and trained to handle. The beating I got at the throwdown gave me a guage and a place to build from. But I wouldn't reccomend that route to everybody. I just tend to be stubborn.

Ray are you still planning on coming through to the next one?

As for the first part, I train E-Chuan at my master's house in Queens. It is a stand a lone art but you need to have a foundation in Taiji, Ba Gua and Hsing-I first.

As for the second part (it's hard to tell if you're being sincere or sarcastic), yes, it is internal. And yes, Chuan means fist. The "E" is pronounced like the "I" in the I-Ching (Book of Changes) to respresent Changing buty also E for Energy, Economy of movement, Easy to do and Evolution.

Well nobody has decided on a time yet, so as soon as some people commit we can make a decision like that. Not for a couple weeks though. It seems like it'll take a while to get everything organized.

I'd like to show up to a TD. I can make it the city Monday, Teusday or Thursday.
I'd go for sub grappling or amatuer MMA style9no elbows please!)
Actually whatever goes I'm down with.

Alright - the original dates that would have worked for me came and went...

I'm moving out of NYC next thursday (3rd? 4th? whatever), so I doubt I'll be able to make it to a TD this summer.

I'm disappointed - I'll hopefully get to train with you all at some point, and I'll try to get to the next NYC TD I can - it's not that far from me in CT.

Good luck with the TD everybody.

vinh -

Earlier in this thread, Pojac was nice enough to post this:
http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showpost.php?p=1012936&postcount=28

I haven't trained with them, so I'm not the guy to talk to about that.

The NYU club is free (insctruction = free, gym access = $10). It's been meeting inconsistently lately, but here is the instructor's email address:
mdh266@nyu.edu

He can put you on the mailing list, and then you'll have a bullpen of grapplers to roll with at the very least.

The NYU club will have 2-3 guys there tonight at 6:30 to roll (no instruction tonight). I'll try to get there, but they might keep me late at work.

edit:: and by "there" I mean Coles Sports Complex at Mercer and Bleeker streets - bottom floor, wrestling room, connected to the bball courts.
