Should I deadlift and squat on the same day or different days? Would it be okay to deadlift on monday and ssquat on wedensday? Will I be to sore? I thought they hit similar areas so Im not sure what to do. For those who squat and deadlift do you split them up or do them together?

BTW current lift is
deadlift : 215
squat : 0 (never did them)

A couple of unprovided details here...

How hard do you push yourself? That will provide the answer as to whether or not you'll be too sore. If, after two days, you are no longer sore from doing deadlifts, then you could manage a monday-wednesday split. Sometimes I'm sore for a couple of days, so I've got an every-third-day thing going.

How often do you plan on doing these? If you plan on doing deadlifts and squats once a week, then split them up or you won't manage to do enough of either (unless you are going really light, but that won't do much for strength.) I've never tried doing them both on the same day, several days a week, so I can't comment on how well that might work if it is your intention.

The most important thing is if you can manage to do them on the same day or if you can do each with only a day in between.

I don't have much trouble doing them with only a day in between, so my guess is that most people won't either.

Split them up. You might be able to do them now while the weights are still low but once they get heavy, there's no way.

I have done them on the same day without any problems. I am currently on week 5 of one of Chad Waterbury's programs from over on T-Nation and I have squats and deads on mondays and squats again on fridays. I started this program cold coming back from an injury and surgery and had about a week of soreness in the legs even though I went easy on the weight.

If you don split them out consider putting another day in between, so something like mon/thurs or mon/fri.

I could do both on the same day, both only one of those would be full balls out. I usually push myself with a set of squats (8RM to 12RM), take a 1 minute rest then follow with a set of deadlifts (usually stiff-leg deadlifts, sometimes sumo deadlifts) using a moderate weight (a weight that could allow me 20 reps say). Take another minute rest and repeat. Why do I do it? Dunno... keeps it interesting, and it's not like it's easy either :tongue3:

Having said that, no way in hell that I could do both with heavy loads. No way. Either you will sacrifice form, or you will overtrain or get injured or some bad **** like that. I don't think any person should try to go balls out with both exercises in the same day... but every person is different.

Also, in my experience, I cannot do the other way around. That is, balls out deadlifts followed by squats with a moderate weight. I find dealifts to be more taxing to my back.

Play it safe, and see what happens.

ps... why do you want to do both on the same day????? I would rather follow a set of squats with a good set of leg curls... or better yet, have a set of front squats (excellent for judo/bjj), followed by a stretch of the hamstrings, and then 1 set of back extensions and 1 set of ab crunches or side crunches (for your obliques) ... don't neglect your core.

Then I would leave the deadlifts for another day.... that would be my preference :tongue3:

stiff legged deads? romanian deads? or traditional deads? big difference. stiff works hamstrings and low back. romanian hip extensors and hams and lower back. traditional works same as squats but more back. Abe froman..what type of deads you refering to re Chad waterbury?

I've seen a lot of success with squats and SLDLs in the same day (albeit spaced apart a good bit in the workout), but neither I nor a lot of the people I know have had a lot of success with regular deads and squats in the same day at the same intensity.

I do deadlifts and squats together once per week. But on that day I do high reps with lower weight. 5 sets, 20 reps. I also do leg presses like that.

On days that I do heavy weight (for me) which is 5 sets, 5 reps of 235lbs I do not do squats. Mainly because I fear that the deadlifts have destroyed me and I will be unable to complete. The idea of having weights crash around in the gym and me looking like a complete fucking tool stops me from pushing it. Instead I just go over to the leg press machine.

This thread now means jack **** to me. Youll know why if you read my other thread entitled "I hurt my back today"

Oh well thanx for the advice. Im sure others will appreciate it.

I got my back injured pretty badly in a car accident and it took me several months to get back to squatting and deadlifting. It happened in April or May of 2005, and once I got started I was deadlifting a measly 135 to get back into it. By October, I nailed 325 for 8 reps, was over 400 by December, and just did an 18" deadlift with 500 easy and almost 550 and a farmer's deadlift of 510 total (255 per hand). It just takes time to get back into it.

To the deadlifters: how did you get to 405? That's my next goal. Last workout I did 365 for six singles and it was tough. 405 isn't that far off but I was wondering how long you did heavy singles before going to higher rep work.

Do you do singles until you stop progressing as fast and then switch to higher reps(and vice versa)?

Well, I'm no pro, but deads my fav lift. What's holding you from 405? I mean, in my case is was forearms giving out when I was trying to get up to 450 last year, so I just focused on them for awhile and then went at it.

That's been my thing mostly, for improving compound lifts, is to mix it up with related muscles. Don't know if that's great training methodology, but I like it, esp. because I don't like doing more than 2-3 reps of deads, even with light weight, because I can't really drop it at the gym where I train and I notice my form tends to deterioate if I do several reps.

Probably my squat i holding back the dead. I started squatting and am at 215 for 9 singles last time, while my dead was 365 for 6 singles. So I pretty much know that my squat is going to bring me up.

I was thinking of forgetting deads for a while and substitute with box squat and SLD. I think the extra day for legs and the box itself will do very good. Any thoughts?
