What is up with that, anyway? Is there a reason for that? Is it an issue with storing them, or getting them in country or what?

Uniformity. Commanders already need to worry about the reliability of their issued equipment without having to think about whether or not the revolver private Joe Snuffy's mom packed in his lunch is going to work when the **** hits the fan.

Standardized weapons = standardized ammo, maintenence, and level of training. Getting a zero on an AK is much different than getting a zero on an M-16, or an M-4 with a red-dot accessory, etc.

If commanders in the field identify the need for specific weapons, they get them issued to them.

I love my tommy gun. That ************ is heavy as ****. I don't have a drum magazine though they're like $300 the last I checked for a 50 round, and $600 for a 100 rd. You're right though, I need one.

Thanks on the HK, it feels like it comes out of starship troopers. So much lighter than the Thompson.
