Serious gun-defence question - since we have quite a few military guys on the thread.

My ex-military credentials are pretty lame but I was trained on assault rifles, pistols and got to play with various other kit like baton guns, 105mm "light gun" etc. Enough for me to conclude that 99.99% of unarmed "gun defence" is complete bullshit. Even when you train the defences Alive you just realize how unlikely you are to succeed.

Is there general concensous on this issue?

My views, I'd rather face a gun than a knife. If it's a knife, I'm running, with a gun, if I can I'm doing something.

The chances are very low, but looking at FBI data, if I'm being moved to another area, I might as well fight, as my chances of living are next to nil. I'll have to look up the stats again, but in some cases, complying will get you killed.

I think it has a capacity of three rounds. (which is the same as many pump action hunting shotguns)

Keep in mind it's not about whats "more useful" it's simply something interesting to take to the range. Though given the choice i'd probably take the short shotty over a 5 shot .38special for home defense if that was ones reason for buying a gun in the first place.

Yeah, I've only got two credible advices on the topic and they contradict eachother;

From a man who once shot a guy with a shotgun and witnessed guns being used on other occassions: "Look them in the eyes. It's harder to shoot a man if he's looking you in the eyes. Turn your back and he'll fire.".

From one of the training staff during my military days, who had served in Northern Ireland/Bosnia etc: "Run very fast in a zig-zag fashion and don't stop until you reach the next shire". I think he was talking about pistols and in the context of someone already firing at you.

I'm an ex-Army NCO and Jeffersonian Libertarian.

You know I gave a little thought to this when I was driving my kid to school this morning. At no point in my life can I ever see myself having to do a full-on 4-wheel drift around a hairpin turn at 60 miles an hour on gravel or snow.

But that doesn't stop me from enjoying my WRX, which is basically a street legal World Rally Championship race car. I enjoy being able to blow past a stupid teenager in a riced out honda civic like they were standing still at a stoplight, if I were ever so inclined.

Hell, I think some people just don't enjoy life as much as others do... or they've some how been conditioned to think it's embarassing to be too enthusiastic about something, and so are generally unenthusiastic about everything or hide their enthusiasm out of a fear of social repercussions.

I don't make fun of LARPers because they enjoy what they do. I make fun of them because the majority of them transcend the "P" for "Playing" into "L" for "Living", and live out their fantasies with intentions towards supplanting belief in the real world for what they wish the real world would be. Many if not most of them take it way too far and deserve to be laughingstocks for it.

Guns can kill people. But they can also make a can of shitty soda explode, demonstrate one's focus and precision via target shooting, and eliminate the problem of a woodpecker boring a hole into your siding. (Ok, that's overkill, but after having spent $16,000 replacing siding because of a fucking woodpecker, I've given strong thought to shooting the fuckers with my AK instead of my pellet gun.)

The fact that so many people in this generation fail to grasp the concepts of defending yourself, your loved ones, and your property with all available options, instead of just putting themselves at the mercy of criminals, fucking sickens me. If you're going to try to hurt me or someone I love, I'm going to end you. And I won't lose a wink of sleep over it
