I'm considering competing in the NAGA event that will be held in Cicero on May 20.
Is anyone else planning on being there?
My main concerns at this point are money (registration is $70 and I'm a poor college student) and the level of competition. By May 20, I'll technically have been training for eight months, which would put me in the same division as guys who have been training hard every day for two years. I understand the importance of pressure-testing myself and learning through defeat, but I'm somewhat wary of showing up like "HAY GUYS" and embarassing myself and my school.
Does anyone have an information about what to expect beyond what's on the website and event flyers? I'm curious as to what the atmosphere is like at NAGA events and how n00bs like me are treated.
This depends largely on your school and there's a 66.7% chance that I am talking out of my ass, BUT I would maybe advise against it. I've rolled with several Judo BBs and browns and while most of them could throw me like no other, their dealing with shoots and wrestling type activity on the feet was not amazing and, on the ground: I can rape them.
This depends ALOT on your school though, some Judo schools are badass, some are not.
What's your groundwork/takedown experience?
Plus you have no gi to work with. . .

I don't know what your training regiment will be, but without trying to knock you or your dedication at all, you've had some difficulty against me in BJJ sparring, and I only have an aggregated total of 6 months of BJJ training.
However, I think $70, if you can afford it, is a good way to give yourself a gut check and legitimately say that you put your skills to the test. Too bad BJJ doesn't seem to have the same avenues for testing that striking does. You could get an IKF kickboxing match within a month in Illinois.

hi, im new to competing but i think i might try the novice division because i did wrestling for a season (3 months) then started jiu jitsu this month so i might try in the novice division of 139.9 an under for adults
btw samurai steve by any chance u learn in bgma? it says krav maga and kickboxing and thats the only place around me i know that teaches both
also theres an ikf matches every month? ive been trying to get a fight sometime in june/july but the events show the earliest one is in september

Just enter as a beginner AND a novice (6-months or less) in no-gi. If you placed in the beginner category they wont let you compete in the novice category
Expects some wrestlers who will just try to take you down and not try anything. They will let you come back up and take you down again or just try to pin you.
Make sure you read the rules and understand them (no advantages, but points are given for submission attempts).
G'luck.
Why would you register in novice if you have only been practicing BJJ for a month? I am sorry to say it, but you are going to get your ass handed to you, especially at your weight class.
It really takes some technical prowess to hang in at the lower weight classes so I suggest just sticking to your gym and continue working out, and maybe in a year or so see where you fair at your local competition.
Also to the guy wanting to pay $70 to see if he wins or not, I just want to ask why? Why pay $70 to see how good you are compared to other people who could possibly be sandbagging and or people who could utterly suck balls?
I suggest just keep working out man and compare yourself to individuals at your school and how long they have been training and how good you are compared to them. Competition just looks good on paper, it is nice to win and all, but in an overall perspective you are already paying to train and competition will not necessarily make you a better grappler.

Unless you meant "why register as a beginner?"....novice is the lowest division with experiences of 6-months or less.
I registered in both when I competed in my first NAGA. Was trying to get as many fights as possible for my entrance fee. Placed in beginner so they didn't let me compete in novice.

I'm thinking about trying to get up there and compete. I have to find a way to work it out with my boss so I can get that friday off so I can be there in time for weigh-ins. But if I can, I'll most likley go. I'd of course be in novice and white belt divisions.

Phrost!
This is the last straw. Create some sort of mechanism by which you are informed of every time this statement is made so summary executions can begin.

i just wanna go for the hell of it, my wrestling skills was pretty good as i always trained with my varsity partner and always gave him a long battle before he could pin me, its also a novice event, as in people that are training for 6 months or less, ya i just joined jiu jitsu formally a month ago, but i was rolling with friends that were in jiu jitsu for 8 months now since december, i can get in positions pretty easily without getting rolled and turned around, just my submission list is pretty basic
im not expecting to win, im just hoping to do fairly well

I'm thinking i'm only gonna do the white belt gi divison. I'm not sure if I have the cardio to do both gi and no gi (unless I loose right away LOL). I perfer gi over no gi anyways. I'm really pumped and can't wait to go.
