I do not envy you the headache MY ENORMOUS OPPONENT will have when he wakes. But for now, rest well and dream of large women.

Is this some kinda ode to oneself? 'Cause uh, sure sounds like... uhh...

The Princess Bride (http://www.wavlist.com/movies/106/pb-dream.wav) reference is not all that obscure (to us Americans anyway)

I train regularly with Nick Caggia, who usually weighs between 330 and 370, and has several submission victories over black belts in competition.

I'm not trying to brag; just noting that all of the following advice is from rolling with him.

1) Get on top. You don't want that kind of weight on top of you. Learn to wrestle, *****.

2) If you can't take him down, work half guard. I'm 6'4" with long legs, and I still can't effectively manage guard on him - I can't effectively lock my legs for closed guard, and I can't keep him from pressing me down flat in open guard. Half guard gives you some control over his weight while letting you escape your hips to the side so his weight isn't directly on you. Work your sweeps and back taking.

3) Stay in side mount when possible. I'm the tallest person in my gym, and in mount on Nick I only barely get my knees to touch the ground. It's inherently easier for him to reverse from there. Take mount to get the points and stay ready to bail out of it at any time. Spend most of your time in side, where you can better inhibit his movement.

half-guard while he's standing or are you waiting till he lies down and goes to sleep??

Perhaps we should work on getting him off his feet first... ;)

I DON'T have the longest legs in the world, and the second I get mounted on this guy, he will roll me off. It's like trying to hold mount on a goddamned balloon. Side control is where it's at with that guy.

Butterfly guard. Keeps the weight off your body, lets you move.

I hate being open weightclass

Stay on top: I consider myself to have pretty solid sweeps from guard and sweeping massive tall/heavy fellows is FUCKING HARD. Like better folks have said, keep your hips free, whether this means butterfly guard, half-guard or out wrestling them to be on top is up to you.

Have good cardio/muscular endurance: You will probably need alot of strength to move them around, even breathe, when these guys are on top of you, even if your technique is good. Keep in mind they also have alot to move around, TRY to use this to your advantage (this has proven harder than I ever thought). If you gas with a 300+ guy (god forbid he's mostly muscle) on top, you will be in a world of pain.

TAKE THEIR BACK LOL ITS OBVIOUS ISNT IT?!?! I know, but this I have to mention because there is nothing more fun (for me) than back mounting some huge musclehead and riding him around/face-choking him while whispering in his ear: "squeel piggy, SQUEEL!!!!" like that hillbilly in Deliverance.

You've never pulled half guard before?

Am I actually going to have to explain how to properly pull half guard?

Butterfly guard. Keeps the weight off your body, lets you move.

Have you ever tried to play butterfly guard on a 350 lber who has good base and is trying to drive forward and flatten you out?

It is not, generally, a good place to be.

...Side control is where it's at with that guy.

I competed in the 200+ division in my last tournament. I prefer to play the top the whole time until I make it to the back. I weighed in at 213 and had to fight some guys much bigger than me. I had a much, much easier time controlling them from sidemount.

One mistake I made was when I was in mount, I went to put my knee and shin over one of his arms to pin it. I stopped there to prepare to swing my leg around for a triangle from mount. Having my leg on the guys bicep gave him enough leverage to easily lift me off, despite having two points of base on the other side.

At an earlier point in the match with this same guy he was in my guard. I like to play a very active guard and force my opponent to react. However, this guys size advantage and strength advantage kept me in place. I couldn't do anything but wait for him to make a move.

Big guys with little technique can be tough, big guys with comparable (to you) technique are impossibly tough. Thats been my experience.

On an enormous person who happens to be STANDING UP?

well no.

Anyway, as far as half guard goes, i usually grapevine the leg as soon as I can and try to houdini my way out using underhooks ala bravo's methods.

The lockdown seems to work better on guys with big calves for some reason.

I've had several guys tap just from that.

Maybe this is just because I have pretty strong legs, but just about the only time I even attempt butterfly is with big dudes. Guys my size and smaller can scramble around it because it isn't great, but it does me a lot more good than my closed guard (usual favorite), which is almost helpless with 300+ pounds pinning my hips.

Then again most of the huge guys I roll with (haven't in awhile though) are big on muscles, low on technique, so I dunno.
