</table>At 10 pm est Forest Griffen, Luke Cummo, Matt Hughs, Rich Franklin, Dana White among others were discussing MMA on "The Big Idea with Donny Deutsch". The discussion was mostly about how primal and violent the sport is, and what this will do to the viewers. Standard MMA stuff. The fighters represented the sport very well and Donny Deutsch came off as a dick.
The fighters constantly corrected Mr Deutsch on his overblown and frequently untrue statements. Deutsch mentioned that eye gouging and biting was legal at the top of the show. Griffen corrected him immeadately before he addressed any other questions. Deutsch called the events no holds barred, again he was corrected. He went on to say how dangerous it was. The fighters emphasized how it was no more dangerous than any other contact sport and how there has never been a death in a sanctioned fight. Deutsch kept commenting on how primal and violent it was, showing clips here and there.
Everyone there did a fantastic job of shooting down his arguements by talking about how a tap can happen whenever a fighter feels that they are in great danger. One of the best counterpoints was by Cummo when Deutsch mentioned a guy being on top of someone and pounding away being very brutal, Luke pointed out how a whole lot of the time a guy will land a submission from the bottom and win, therefore far from totally helpless.
Then a doctor came out who was saying how horribly hazardous MMA competition was. He pointed out how a sharp blow to the head can kill just in the same way that a boxer who died recently (forgot the name) did. He also made an ass of himself to anyone in the know by saying that a strangulation (cutting off blood to the brain) is like having lots of minor strokes. Of course tons of research has been done saying otherwise, but this guy ran his mouth off anyway.<table class="image" align=right border=0>

</table>At the end of the MMA segment, Deutsch asked one of the fighters to put him in a choke. Forest Griffen stepped up and put him in a RNC after explaining the tap system. Deutsch of course taps quickly and then claims "if you had held that for 10 or 15 more seconds I would have died." Forest tells him that he's wrong. Deutsch says something like "Correct me if I'm wrong, but I couldn't breathe, and without oxygen, you can't live." The response was beautiful and I don't remember it word for word, but I'll try. "Well, for one, a person can live submerged in water for 4 minutes so, no. Also the choke I applied was cutting off oxygen to the brain, so you weren't even running out of air, you were just going to go limp and I'd let go."
The show's 2nd half hour was devoted to boxing, but I had to go meet up with some friends so I didn't catch it. I think he had Sugar Ray Lenard on and was addressing recent deaths.
All in all, I think this was a good public outing for MMA. I doubt anyone set in their ways had their mind was changed by this, but those on the fence about it could have shifted views. The fighters were all dressed nicely, spoke well and were very polite. The choice of having Franklin and Cummo in the group was a very wise decision. When dressed nicely, they both look very nonthreatening (Deutsch commented that Luke looks like an accountant) guys who work out pretty regularly.
Conclusion: Deutsch comes off as a major douchebag. The doctor he should probably have his license revoked because he has little idea at all what he's talking about. The fighters and UFC representatives were all excently prepared and did a great job.
