I use the MT kick. The purpose of stepping off to the side is to avoid counters head on. But it also telegraphs to your opponent what you're about to do. IMO it's best used in a combo by setting up strikes to have your opponent protecting his face, leaving his lower body wide open.

actually, the purpose of the step in muay thai is to open up your hips to allow for proper rotation in the kick.

But not the same. The standing foot is flat in the karate guy's kick, and his kicking leg is straight. Master Chai is on the ball of his foot and his leg is bent, thus contacting Paulsen on the front part of his face, if Eric didn't have his hand covering. Also, Chai's hip is turned over much more than the karate kid's hip.
