What about savate?
Do they have anything that looks like a round kick?

Ken, just out of curiousity, do you tend to chop the kick downwards at times, as I was describing?
Only when training indonesian martial arts stuff. Personally, I don't think it would be that effective in a live situation. Then again, lots of people do tend to turn away from round kicks thinking that they are absorbing impact. Most people I train with don't turn away.

Does anyone here throw more then one TYPE of round kick? It seems silly to say to yourself, "this is the Thai kick, I do MT, so this is my roundkick"
Didn't your shidoshi ever teach you using anything that works?

I tend to throw different kinds of kicks. I'm not totally sure what the specifics of Kyokushin or ITF kicks are, but my kicking style is pretty varied. I strike with the shin whenever I strike to the body, and practically never fully chamber my leg; most of the kicks I throw are either fully commited, or fakes. When I'm close in, I chamber the knee a lot more so that I can kick from a shorter range (since knees are illegal in TKD).

I think itīs best described what BatRonin put as ITF-type kick, and it does indeed have the cons he pointed. Plus newer peeps tend to open their hips too early and telegraph it, and miss the torque to add power.
And Savate people wear full body leotards, and that is just PLAIN WRONG.

On the other hand, doesn't savate train to kick with the boot rather than the shin? I'd imagine that the momentum being concentrated on the toe-cap surely compensates somewhat for the lower power of the kick?

Yeah, took me a while to get used to kick with point of the shoe. Some of our bigger guys kick like mule, so you can imagine how it feels to get hit. Solar plexus in particular. :icon_pale
In Savate Defense they use also shin, and are not so conserned with good form/distance.
I dropped a guy once with one of those "wimpy" kicks where you raise the knee like a front kick and then flip it over sideways into a "powerless" snap-roundkick. Was wearing shoes and caught him in the solar plexus. . .and then was helping him off the floor and trying to restore his breathing.
Master Reid over at the CSC in Atlanta teaches them the same way. He and his students do a good job generating power.
