Sooo, at the request of another member, I've been asked to start this as a seperate thread from the NorCal McThrowdown/Pattycake fest.

I talked to my friend/instructor who owns a Karate school in Pleasant Hill. He's down to host a gathering for Martial Artists to come together and spar/grapple/work on techniques etc. etc.

It'll be a mellow attitude, leave your ego at home. Come play nice, play rough...but play. We want you to have fun! If things get a lil "too" rough, we'll ask you to tone it down, and if that doesn't work then you'll be asked to leave. But I dont forsee that happening. At the minimum, bring a mouthpiece, groin protector, and some sort of hand protection. People of all skill level are welcome.

Its free to all, so if you guys have any questions, please feel free to post up or PM. I have posted this on a couple of other forums I visit, so Im hoping for about 15-30 people to show. I just wish we had one of those nifty buzzers like ModCom did :hello2:

Info:

Kyokushin School of Karate

Thanks all!

Sounds good. I'll be there, and I suspect other members of the modcom crew will show up as well.
If you don't have a buzzer, it is pretty easy to make one on a computer by simply making a looping wave file that beeps every 30 seconds and gives off a long tone after, say 3 minutes. You can use a laptop and hook it up to some speakers. You load the file into your media player, and select repeat... instant round buzzer. If you need more info pm me.

Please excuse my lack of effort for both Google and the serch function- But could you by chance post some information about Kyokushin.
I am not familiar with it's style- is it a branch of TKD?

I dont know if this helps you: http://american-kyokushin.com/

There are so many Kyokushin sites out there...Regardless, this isnt just for Kyokushin, its for everyone! I say come on down =) Im gettin decent responses from http://www.bayarearidersforum.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=136333

If you were to ask me of a quick description of Kyokushin, I'd say full contact Karate (minus punching to the head unless you have pads on) with a teeny bit of ground/join work (depending on who you ask).

Hope to see you there!

Justin

Thanks for the new thread. I should be able to make it.

I noticed a lot of folks didn't have shinguards at other events, but I think they are a good idea if you want to spar with any kicking. I will bring mine, and I encourage others to do the same.

Maybe we could arrange a carpool from the nearest BART station?

:car40:

Just added to event calendar!

Fyi, I edited the first post to add a minimum requirement of mouthpiece, groin protection, and hand protection. And if you are under 18, bring a parent to sign for you! So far this sounds like good fun!

Maybe a better idea would be not to have anyone under 18 participate. It is one thing to have kids participate in a sanctioned regulated tournament, but i don't know if they should be playing with random adults with 4 oz gloves at a throwdown. I would encourage them just to watch.

God damn that's far. Anyone want to do real hard sparring?

I agree with you on that. I dont really think this is an event for youngins. I'll touch base with my friend and see what he thinks.

The last event was pretty fun... I even delayed my vaccation for a day so I could go. How far is it for you?
There will probably be people willing to do hard sparring (myself and a few people from my gym included), although at the last one, I didn't see anyone striking hard enough to KO each other. There may or may not be people willing to go that hard, and ultimately the gym may say no to that for liability. But, if the last throwdown was any indication, there will be people going hard in at least some of the matches. Just make sure your partner knows how hard you want to go.

I also recommend a handheld timer such as this one sold by Ringside/Combat Sports:

It's very portable, and can be toted around in a sunglasses case.

I'd like to come... what's the nearest major city to pleasant hill?

JLuo

Nearest major city? Um, Concord I suppose. If that doesnt ring a bell, its about 20-25 min north/east of Berkeley.

Define "too rough"?

Generally there's a "don't be a dick" policy in effect at every Throwdown. While you are there to "hurt" other people (punches aren't for loving your neighbor), you're not there to injure anyone.

Anyone who actually starts a out and out assault at a Throwdown should and will likely have charges pressed against them. The level of contact is up to the individuals participating, but if it's at the point where you cannot shake hands and go grab sushi or a beer with the other guy afterwards, you don't have any business showing up.
