They made a stop at the Wah Lum temple on the way. It is nice to see my kung fu brothers on there. Wish I could have gone to watch.

I saw at least 3 takedowns, including 1 very nice one.
I love watching san shou, for that reason. I'd like to see more of it.

The short version:
Master Pui Chan moved to Florida in the 80's and built a full time kung fu school in Orlando.
Sifu John Wai, his fighters were on the video, is good friends with many of the sifu's at Wah Lum, as his wife is GM Chan's niece.

So, it isn't what i'd normally think of as a temple, but rather a dojo? Do students live there?

At this very moment? I don't know. I've sparred there, but I don't train there. I know they used to have live in students there. Well, they have a house across the street, but the students were there to train all day/week.
And there are no monks there, just kung fu students and teachers. I think it was more of a temple atmosphere in the beginning, or so I've heard from people who were around there in the 80's.

Good for Florida Sanshou for putting it out there. Keep training hard and you'll be winning.

That place is really cool to visit. I got the opportunity to go in for a demo back when I was in the 4th grade. One of the head guy's grandkids went to my elementary school. Actually, a friend of mine trains at their satellite school out near Altimonte Springs. Sorry, just saw that it was something close to home.
Scroll down the page a little bit and you will find a recap.
It answers some questions earlier on this thread. The Sanshou division did not receive enough fighters, so 3 out of 6 fighters decided to fight in the Muay Thai division.
So it was truly a Muay Thai vs San Shou match, albeit under Muay Thai rules. One of the fighters
"Trillas shot in and executed a perfect double leg takedown that wowed the crowd, however, the technique was labeled illegal because this was not Sanshou rules, but because Trillas simply acted on instinct and didn't deliberately mean to use the technique the Referee let Trillas off with a warning."
One match was called, one match lost by decision, one by TKO.
Congrats to the guys at Florida San Shou!

Dude, Wah Lum Temple in Orlando is bullshido. We get turnovers from them and I know instructors that used to teach there. They're more of a Wushu-type school and too focused on $. I don't learn kung fu to dance.

You are no doubt from Li Kwai (http://www.shaolinassociation.com/). Sifu Tracy Fleming, right?
When Tracy was 14 years old he met Chan Pui, Master of the Wah Lum Kung Fu Temple. Master Chan Pui personally invited Instructor Tracy to train intensely to become an instructor in the Wah Lum Tam Tui Northern Praying Mantis Style. Sifu Tracy Fleming became an instructor and also became one of the top competitive martial artists in the US, traveling to Europe and China to compete, where he was undefeated.

Not bullshido, but has the definite trappings of a McDojo. Same can be said of Li Kwai.
More importantly, I need more sparring partners in Orlando. Drop me a line.

I know my teacher was trained under Master Chan. It would be pretty sad not to know the history of my own Sifu. Also, there is no doubt in my mind that Chan is the real deal. I've heard stories from Sifu and others about his prowess. His school used to be top notch in the 80s and early 90s. I know many other instructors that USED TO train and work at Wah Lum temple. But there is a reason they all left. Troy Provesano- a full-contact champion both nationally and internationally, Tom Turcotte- a very powerful internal stylist that mastered iron palm and could do one legged squats on a wine glass, Anthony Fransella- one of the toughest and strongest fighters I have seen outside of the competition circuit. These are only a few, there were many more hardcore Wah Lum practioners besides them and my teacher. I think the school really started taking a dive in quality when Mimi Chan took over; because we have taught a lot of students that used to go there, and it seems to be getting worse and worse.
And regardless of how our website looks, at least we can fight at our school and we know the applications of our forms; we don't just dance.
On a lighter note, if you want to crosstrain a bit, I'd be happy to. Where in Orlando are you located?

I don't know how long you guys been in both schools but when I was at Lee Koon Hung's CLF school in Tamarac, FL I thought Wah Lum more cheesy wushu and this was in the early to mid 90's. Its good to see they are at least doing San Shou.

For what its worth, I don't train at the Temple. It's funny though, Tommy actually stopped teaching kung fu whatsoever last I heard, he was dissapointed he couldn't find dedicated students.
Anyways, not all Wah Lum schools just dance Some are training for San Shou or full contact, others just dance.
Ok, so A LOT of others dance, but damn, they do it well.
When is your sparring class? I live up in Lake Mary, not too far from "Kung Fu Hot Dogs" (You would have had to seen the poor placement of the hot dog sign to get this)
