How safe would Thailand be for a young disabled white man travelling with his hippy support worker and a Canadian kung fu master? We're planning a trip.
What parts are best to visit? Where can I pick up (genuinely nice) chicks?

I would be afraid of robbers, ladyboys, Muay Thai wannabes and those hilltribes who kill disabled babies.

Thailand is generally peaceful and travel in most parts of the country can proceed, but with noteworthy exceptions in certain provinces.

Summary of Current Security Situation:

• The U.S. Department of State does not list any current travel advisories for this country.
• Pirates, bandits and drug traffickers operate in border areas, especially near Burma, Cambodia and Laos. These areas should be avoided.
• A Muslim insurgency in the south was recently revived in January 2004. Travelers should avoid the southern most provinces of Narathiwat, Yala, Songkhla and Pattani. Local militants continue to launch attacks on a near daily basis and, although foreigners have not been targeted, they do face the risk of being caught in a violent incident.
• While risks of terrorism are generally low in other parts of Thailand, there is an increasing concern that Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) may be active in the country. Insurgents have recently been shifting to softer targets, raising concerns that violence may possible spread to other tourist destinations and possibly even Bangkok. In June 2003, a man was arrested trying to sell dirty bomb materials in Bangkok.
• The largest insurgent group operating in southern Thailand, PULO, has warned it will conduct large scale attacks in Bangkok. While most of PULO's previous operations involve small IEDs, it is notes that significant amounts of explosives were stolen in the Yala province in March.
• Crime rates in Bangkok are similar to that of many large cities in the U.S. Credit card fraud, gem/jewelry scams, purse snatching (especially utilizing motorcycles), pick- pocketing and residential thefts are common. There has been an increase in violent crime involving bus robberies, foreigners being robbed/assaulted by taxi drivers and robbery/murders of tourists in hotels.
• Travel to the southern provinces of Krabi, Phuket and Phang-nga can proceed but visitors should be aware of ongoing rehabilitation operations in coastal areas damaged but the December 26, 2004 tsunami.

Well I will be in company (the kung fu bloke and my support worker) and I NEVER carry money in bags etc-only in my wallet on my person.

Dude-- why go to Thailand when you have legal whorehouses DownUnder? They'd be a lot safer than the ones in Thailand.

Failing that there are legal brothels in Nevada if you're ever in the U.S.

THere's other reasons to go to thailand. And thailand has reformed a LITTLE bit in that regard in recent years.

Um, Mr Bumfu sirrah,

I want to go to Thailand to find GENUINE ladies and whilst a lot of hookers ARE nice people a lot AREN'T. I am rather tired of paying for sex.

P.S. If you have no training as yet, find a freestyle wrestling club!

P.P.S. I also want to meet sangha (nuns and monks) and eat the nice food and observe how mainstream Thai culture treats disabled natives and foreigners.

I have only been in Thailand (Bangkok) for a week while backpackin through asia. My impression was that it was safe. I have friends who go there regularly who confirm this. The worst "violence" against tourists that I heard about was kids slashing backpacks open in order to steal whatever falls out. You are more in danger of losing your money to hoaxters and corrupt police men. Hotels and travel books will inform you of the most common ploys.

After having backpacked through south east asia alone for three months, I never encountered any violence at all. The thai especially seem like a very peaceful and calm people; the only place where I at time felt threatened was Cambodia (mainly from the corrupt police who will demand money from you for the tiniest missdemeanor; in my case for bumping into some device thay had set up around a corner) I still have some thai friends in Bangkok that I talk to via MSN. I honestly find it hard to believe sometimes that the Thai are the worlds toughest stand-up fighters.

Many, many fighters would dispute your claim, Mr Fighter.

I liked Thailand and would go back in a second... spent 3 or so weeks in the southern part (near Ao Nang, a little village near "James Bond" island (which is cool btw) and then up to Bangkok)... I never once felt threatened and the scams are fairly easy to spot... just dont go on any "mystery" tuk tuk rides to any gem farms or anywhere really...

The only time I felt mildly borderline was when on my last night I had to sleep in the airport (due to an insanely early flight) and when I found a nice quiet out of the way corner to sleep in (actually a blocked off dead ended corridor) I was joined by a squad of Thai Military, and then Thai police... they bunked down all around me... was a bit nervous due to all the stories you hear but had a great night talking to them...

EXACTLY!

But I don't want a hooker. Wanna wife, potentially.

With reference to your other point, there are striking arts out there that have NEVER competed against Muay Thai. Assuming there are 10 000 arts and half are striking, then that leaves 4 998 other arts to go after karate got done over and even then I wouldn't rule karateka out.

A "purrer" vs a Thai boxer! I'd pay to see that! "Whack-fol-a-diddle" etc.

If I may venture a guess, they don't have to get on their knees to blow you.

Also, I'd echo everyone else's sentiments. Thailand is safe as long as you don't bring controlled substances.

P.S. Also, don't try to challenge the evil M. Bison. He'll just do psychocrusher over and over again and the computer totally turned up the damage on his ass.

Maybe, but you must admit there is ABSOLUTELY no other reason to go to Nevada. Actually, I was just fooling around & sarcasm was lost on the net.

Good luck with the wife search. Be safe.
