Ishinryu guy, you've only been doing it for a year so I can forgive you, but..... *big intake of breath* DON'T MAKE GOAL POSTS WITH YOUR HANDS WHEN YOU KICK, YOU WILL LOSE TEETH!
Keep your hands up man, no matter what kick you're doing- brown belt in TKD here, I know my point sparring kickery damnit- always have at least one hand glued to your face.
I have to give you credit for playing by new rules, hope it won't be the last time. Also, it'll get easier to gauge as you progress, but girl does not necessarily equal "go easy".
Anna and Kid, excellent work.
I loved these vids, a great example of the importance of training style; point sparring- make contact and break- does not stand before continuous sparring. All 3 of you have been doing this for less than a year, granted the ladies train more often, but it's still a great example of beginner combat and sheer style vs. style: fun stuff.
Being involved in the OSU Judo, TKD, and MMA teams I would love to do a sort of experiement; get about 6 freshman of roughly equal physical attributes and no MA experience, put two in each class, have them fight at the end of the year and see what happens.
This was likea tiny, completely uncontrolled, and really not at all representative example of what I'd like to do......
Uh.... right, that made sense.
Again, great stuff boy and girls.

Point taken. It was a bit off subject, so I appologize. However, I still think that video wasn't much to look at. Why didn't the man not fall back when the woman jumped on his back? Is there a rule against things like that in sparring?
Not trying to start anything, just curious to understand more about sparring, which I know little.
You really should start a thread about it, then, after maybe reading a little about it first. Make sure you stipulate you are from a school that doesn't spar, you don't understand the need for it, and that you are serious. Be polite, be open minded, expect a couple jokers to screw with you, and read first, then decide if you need to make your thread.
I'd say start your reading here (http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5553&page=1), here (http://www.bullshido.net/modules.php?name=Content&file=viewarticle&id=7), and here. (http://www.bullshido.net/modules.php?name=FAQ&myfaq=yes&id_cat=6)

Im the isshinryu guy they fought, and let me say those girls were tough.
Now I wish Anna had chosen a better name for this thread because I do not represent Isshinryu karate, Im not even a black belt.
I admit I sucked, this was the first time I met and sparred with these girls, and I didnt know what to expect. I never sparred with those rules before (kicking to legs and takedowns) So this was my first experience with something like this, which is why I did it, to experience it.
It does suck to be beat by girls, but you have to understand, these girls train in that 6 days a week, while I only visit dojo 1-2 times per week and spar less than that.
So enough excuses, I think I held my own considering, and I had fun and learned alot anyway.
And when I threw my glove down and said "I dont wanna fight you anymore" , I just did that as a joke, trying to be funny.
Props for stepping up and trying out what you know.
Here's a tip: Put your weight behind your kicks, don't just snap them, kick as if your leg was a baseball bat. Then they will feel it.

I appreciate it man. It's great to see you understand that I'm not trying to be confrontational here. I am new to Bullshido, but not to forums. I've been an active forumite for the last few years, bouncing around to different forums.

I dont think he thought of it, if he woud have then I would have choked him regardless so the end result would be the same.

Yeah, the back slam is just kind of one of those "Not so friendly" things, it's like the knee on the tummy or the chin in the eye that just means "I know you're gonna do it, but I'm gonna make it suck"

In this post you have just inadvertently proven why your belieif that "sparring is useless" is so wrong. If you are choking someone and they fall back, they will still get choked out. They might be able to escape, but not if they haven't ever practiced the escape in sparring.

Probably because the back slam is not the 'finishing move' you think it is? Almost every time I've seen a back slam, it has done little besides irritate or at best wind the person who has back, and leaves you on the ground in a back mount, where you'll likely be tapping within 10 seconds if the other person is a better grappler.
Anyhow, nice video of *friendly* sparring, which hopefully will prove to some that these kinds of things are about fun and learning, not kicking the other person's ass. Respect to all involved.

Let me put it this way: I know many a nasty thing to do when someone is choking me that way. All I'm wondering is why he didn't try any of it? But, I'm starting to see that sparring is more geared *not* to severly injure or hurt your partner. Doesn't mean I think sparring is any less pointless. It's kinda like UFC in my eyes. Great fighting, but why fight someone if you can't gouge their eye out? *shrug*
Doesn't mean I'm wrong, just means my opinion is different.

First point: I don't think the "back slam" is any thing close to a finishing move. If they're still alive it's not a "finishing move". I was just wondering why he didn't give her something for her trouble. If he didn't know any escapes (that was obvious enough) then why didn't he at least give her something to think about for next time, and at best maybe give him some time and possibly loosen her grip for an escape?
Like I said before. I was just wondering if they had any sort of rules against things like that.

Nasty things? Like what? **** your pants? None of it works, pal. If you'd have ever TRIED it, you would know this, too.
Gouging someone's eye isn't guaranteed to stop them. Especially if they are already on top of you.

Sparring is a learning tool. It's not a fight. Sparring is for learning all the things about fighting you can't learn from hitting pads, drills, forms, shadow boxing etc.. like footwork/movement, aggressiveness (not being gun shy, so to speak), distancing and reaction time, actually seeing your techniques in action etc etc etc..
You don't want to hurt your sparring partner because then you don't have a sparring partner any more.

Ok. I'm sure ever martial artist who's ever been trapped in a rear choke while said person is on your back has never, NEVER, escaped and there are no possible escapes. You're funny.
And if you think gouging someone's eye out isn't enough to make them not want to continue the fight, then you don't read much. I know women personally who have been in a situation where a large male was attempting to rape them while on top of them. One eye later and he went into a state of shock and panic and didn't (or couldn't) finish his act. Loosing an eye sucks pal, don't think you're superman.
And, if it doesn't stop said eyeless person, thats ok. He sure won't be able to put his full effort into any other attacks he could throw. And he's definitly not going to want to stay down with you in an attempt to get an arm bar while you try and take his other eye.

That's what Randori is for. :)
Hurting someone is temporary, injuring them is different.
