Not that I want to enter the gun control debate, but I would suggest you look at the crime rates/gun crime between detroit and windsor ontario.
How does Windsor stack up against Cincinnati?

So is derailing this into bashing the SCA good or bad?
The prizes involve random things, I've won a harp, a new rapier, several REALLY good bottles of homemade blueberry brandy and a crystal flute.. ::shrug::
As for the "You hit me, no you didn't" arguement, there's a solution to that when people refuse to just play the game by the rules. Up the power.. After a while they might still say you didn't hit them, but it's hard to argue with the marshal that you need to lower your power while still claiming you never actually touched them.
Then they start gunning for you.. Which becomes hilarious...
PS to Viper: How are the SCA going to kick our asses? The few good fighters would agree with us and the rest are harmless.

man this is sooooo far removed from the original topic, it's funny. Anyway swords are for nerds *rolleyes*
Actually, according to this chart (http://www.paladin-its.com/paladin/images/geekv2.gif), the SCA doesn't rank too low.

Compare the rates of sex crimes.
That stat is bullshit anyway - there are about .002 murders with firearms in the US and .000 (statistically - numerically there are usually a little over 100) murders with firearms in canada. NOTE: THERE ARE ACTUALLY MURDERS they are just getting rounded off the scale of the statistics.
Of course the raw numbers are higher - there's like, eight or nine americans for every canadian. (295 million vs 32 million)
Total murders there are .004 per 1000 in the us and .001 in canada - so the slightly higher frequency of murders is across the board, and not directly caused by availibility of weaponry. Probably has something to do with the fact that the US has ghettos with the population size of canadian provinces. Consider the ENTIRE population of your country out of work and or below the poverty line before you lecture an American about our social solutions.
The gap in those statistics actually suggests that most american gun owners are responsible and gun availibility is NOT repsonsible for our murder rate.
But lets look at rape - .074 rapes per 1000 in canada, .030 in the US. Burlglaries per capita - 8.79/1000 in canada, 7.09/1000 in the US. So some of those bullets we fire might just be going into perverts and theives. (note that the figures above are "intentional homicides" - without emailing the statistician from the website, I don't know if that includes legal shootings in self defense or by police)
It's also worth noting that on an international scale, neither Canada or the US are particularly dangerous - compared to south america or africa, for example, both of them are quite nice.
I grabbed my stats for this post from here. (http://www.nationmaster.com/) They're good, but not great.
Hi,
I'm not sure how valid the nation master site is... I wouldn't quote these stats for academic purposes. I completed an undergraduate degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice with a Law concentration, and primarily used Statistics Canada (aka StatsCan) for research. I've found it reliable if you're looking accuarate, current Canadian statistics.

Fixed your typo. BTW, Clements started in the SCA.
Nope, John has a background in sport fencing and some Asian arts training, but was never in the SCA as far as I know. The original creator of HACA (Historical Armed Combat Association) which became ARMA, Hank Reinhardt, had some involvement with the SCA when it was just starting, but not John.
Here's his bio from the website:

And to add to what Matt mentioned. Being involved in the SCA means nothing anyway. It's a fun game to some, doesn't change opinions of it's combatives.
I think their fighters are a collossal joke and still go to every event I can afford.

There are some good ones though. One of the new guys that came into our platoon over in Okinawa had an SCA member as his guide. He destroyed everybody in pugil sticks, even the instructors who tried to take him down a peg or two. Turns out he was the king of something over the kingdom that makes up the majority of the East Coast.
SCA = Society of Crotch Abusers.

This one speaks truth.
Undoubtedly. Only wenches I've ever seen in SCA/Renaissance Fair-type events were about nine-hundred pounds. Fat chicks dig the dresses I guess.

My only problem with the SCA was their rules seemed a little wacky.

You don't like the logic that a blow that completely disables your legs means you get to fight sitting on the ground and that once you're there people are no longer allowed to sneak up on you? ::Sigh::

hehe
Its more of a realism thing, i loose my legs (broken or cut off) I probably wont be fighting anyone, let alone be able to prop myself up. Now if they made you fight so that you were on your back, stomach, or side, i'd have less of a problem.
On the otherhand, in kendo, you cant strike the legs at all (except in naginata vs kendo matches), so it has plenty of realism issues itself.
