these references

yes

I had managed to figure that out

but instead of continuing on with the debating equivalent of me repeatedly punching you in the face vs. your chi sao-like rebuttals and counterpoints, I want to ask you one question

what is your point?

why are you hung up on a particular definition of combat? where is this going?
What about if we agree to stop disagreeing with you to give you enought time to get your thoughts in order and post them up here in some more or less coherent manner?
Honestly - are you going anywhere with this? or do you enjoy these circular arguments?

One more time...

I understand just fine, it's just that I listended, I understood, I thought about it, and I just happen to think you're wrong. There's a difference.

I don't think you really did understand my point before, or you wouldn't have posted what you did, but whatever. No big deal.

I used the word combat on purpose, because I consider self defesne situations to be forms of combat and I consider sports where you practice martial arts, which have served me well in self defense, applicable to self defense. I used the term broadly to include the most possible applications of martial arts. The reason I am not, and will not, be backing down from this point, is because what you are really trying to do is make this fucked up, illogical, back door, "if you call fighting without a gun combat the terrorists win" version of the "street vs sport" argument, and I'm not letting you fucking shoehorn it in here, grond.

Ok, I agree that self-defense situations can be combat. I understand you saying that because you practice martial arts in sports, and those martial arts are applicable to self defense, then those sports are applicable to combat. But that's different from calling the sports themselves combat, which they aren't. They're sports and entertainment. I understand why people call them 'combat sports', because it sounds good. It definately sounds better then 'fistic sports' or 'ring sports'. I personally happen to think that it's just a sexy way of naming the sports, and people aren't trying to usurp the glamor of soldiers or people who are also in 'combat'. But I do think that if people really wanted to define those sports well they wouldn't use that term.

I think we've wasted enough time on this.

Here, a thread with some new ving tsun sparring videos. Check it out, enjoy, insult, cry, whatever makes you happy.

Combat, in those references means to destroy, to kill, to remove completely. When you combat crime, you don't let it tap out and then get back up for another round. When you combat drugs you do not want them to continue existing in your neighbor hood. When you combat disease, do you let it warm up, set a date for the the head to head challange, set some rules so both players survive?

and just because newspapers use the word to exajerate doesn't redifine the word.

Combat is a strong word, and should be used for such things. Other words like battle or fight or conflict are better.

See, you arare doing exactly what grond was doing. Fitting the word to your perception. At least Grond stayed true to his intent. You just back pedaled.

Notice how you left out the political debate. Notice how you left out the crime. Both allow warm ups before the combat happens.

Anyway you both implied JCache was arrogant and illeterate in his use of the word combat. He has shown many example, outside of his control, to the contrary.

Neither you nor Grond have done this except, with in your perceptions.

You used Snatch (media) as an example for WC, yet JCache can't use the news (media) as an example for the use of combat. Hyopcrite.

Nobody 'not trains' to slip a punch.

As someone who trains in boxing, I will drill specifically in just slipping.

That's twice, did you break all your WC buddies and now you need to go to level 2?

Is 'level 2' fighting internet tough guys who insult people due to the protection cyberspace offers?

But to answer your question...No...I just like to give people who throw insults around the opportunity to meet me and teach me the errors of my ways.

So you'll take on all the internet blowhards that travel to NC? But you're somehow not an internet blowhard yourself? Gotcha :))

Let's not do the internet challenge thread, ok.

And for the record, I tell people their martial arts are BS in RL all the time.

um, did you read what i posted? I started out by saying.....o never mind. :BangHead:

The arguement was about the noun Combat vs the verb to combat anyway. This confused the issue. I respected both gronds view that the word gets overused and Jonnys point that sports fighting or self defense can be considered preperation for "combat" or even combat.

Is it fake, and check my quote, I did mention crime. and News Media is known to exagerate Headlines for sales (to combat crime sounds better than to prevent crime). I do not think politics in the USA has gotten to the level of combat :new_2guns , not yet anyway. I never implied Jonny was illeratate, he is one on the smartest, (and funnyist) people on here. Imply means what you read into it, not what I actually wrote :5dunce: . Please show me where I say jonny can't read....

but I guess I could say our troops in Iraq are just struggling, and not say they are in Combat, since you all seem to think synonyms are all equal and that verbs and nouns can be compaired equally.(sarcasim) :XXbazooka

as to the footwork vid link Jonny, yes the kick boxer sucks. I was posting good WT not kickboxing, and I was just showing footwork really.

I am done with Internet Single Combat for today......Gotta get back to work.

Certainly do not take on all internet blowhards...but if people are going to talk ****, I like to let them know where I am in case they want to talk **** in person. Seems reasonable to me.

As many Bullshido old timers can attest to...I've always publicized where I am located because so often I am involved in WC threads that degenerate into a WC ****-fest. Numerous times I have invited people to come train or exchange ideas w/ me b/c I'm very confident that I do not fit the general stereotype of a WC person.

Don't get me wrong...I'm not saying I'm the best and baddest...I just I think I can at least demonstrate that not all WC people are clumsy pussies.

And if you tell people that their martial arts are BS in real life "all the time", you must have a wealth of fighting experience...or you surround yourself with people who can't fight for ****.

Ahm, no, usually I end up getting in interesting discussions, making new friends, showing the people some MA that works, or sometimes, very rarely, finding out I'm wrong and something does work.

The other day out at the bar, I let a guy try to put armlocks on me for 20 minutes. The day after that, I saw a guy wearing an arnis t shirt and I started talking to him about finding a place to do it here. A few weeks ago, a dude told me it "only takes 5#s of pressure to kill a person at the larnyx or temple" and I said, "No, it takes more. Watch" and I applied much more then 5 pounds of pressue to my throat and then my temple.

You'll also find that people deep down KNOW they are practicing BS and they won't start a fight over it. And if they do, you take them someplace with some space and let them have it a little. No one even has to get pissed off or freaked out.

PL...are you anywhere near North Carolina?

Oh boo hoo!! The big bad man is going to hurt me!

That just proves my point even further that you are a moron.

I don't care if you can do it. Slipping a punch is totally counter-intuitive for most people. People FLINCH when they see a punch coming. Then they either bring their hands up while backing up or just eat it. I've never seen anybody just pick it up and do it right.

I never said I was going to hurt you, just asked if you were close to NC. I never threatened you...perhaps I was going to recommend a good BJJ school in the area (we have a very good one)? Or, maybe I was going to tell you about a really popular TKD school in the area that is a big hit w/ kids your age? I hear they will even pick you up in a neat van w/ a cartoon tiger on it!

Anyway...how exactly does that question 'prove your point' that I'm a moron?

But...let's talk about being a moron.

Slipping a punch is simply moving your head out of the way of a punch. Granted, it takes practice, skill and timing to pull it off repeatedly...but you're telling me that moving your head out of the way of a punch is counter-intuitive for most people?

We have demos with no fighting experience walk into our school everyday. Sifu always asks them what they would do if a bully threw a punch at them (and then follows w/ a slow-motion punch for them to demonstrate). It's not uncommon for these demos to move their head to the side out of the way, or take a small step sideways to get out of the trajectory of the punch.

These are people w/ no MA or fighting experience...yet they somehow know that you can move your head out of the way of an on-coming punch???

Crazy huh?
