In modern day wing chun.. if you're not taught by somone from the WSL branch, you're learning CRAP.

http://www.garylamwingchun.com (http://www.garylamwingchun.com/) and http://www.wingchuncoach.com (http://www.wingchuncoach.com/) are both WSL branch wing chun schools, the later coming from the previous school.

We emphasize HARD SPARRING, punishing people who chainslap, take-downs, joint-locks, and standiing traps and standling grappling. Look at the videos on both sites and you'll see what I mean.

A foolish thing to say really. I'm not saying WSL branch is bad, they actually look like some of the best WC that I've seen advertised on the net. But to say that all other WC is crap shows the same old WC arrogance.

Lineage means nothing in the martial arts. You can only judge each instructor in isolation.

The most important thing is what you've said at the end there - sparring, take-downs, stand-up grappling. I'd also include conditioning, weights and bagwork as essential components to a striker's arsenal.

Please, don't be one of the guys who disses other families all day long. That's part of the reason we have a bad rap on here.

Alright, I'll say that all non-WSL WC is *mostly* crap...

My angst doesn't come from traditional WC arrogance.. it comes from being angry at the reputation WC has on the internet, especially in this forum. All those crap videos of WC guys either getting beat up or making a slap-fool of themselves are not Wong Shun Leang... I mean,, I'll admit..

William Cheung is pretty good and so is Emin Boztepe.. but then again.. WSL and William Cheung both have reputations of being bad-ass mma street fighters.. William Cheung was a bad boy for the Chinese mafia (despite being taken to the ground by surprise from a crazy student one) and WSL stopped street fighting when he poked a guy's eyeball out!

On another note, one thing that people on this forum don't emphasize is that JKD has proven to be effective in the MMA world by dozens of fighters.. and JKD has its root in Wing Chun!!

Finally, Grond has some videos of himself sparring. I'm not sure if he's WSL or not, but he seems pretty good. I read some people talking about his supposed lack of power punches or something.. Honestly, imagine if you could do what grond was doing and add boxer punches (Wouldn't be hard to add close-range hooks and upper-cuts)

I'm dying for someone other than a fat non-WSL old guy to step up to UFC..

There's this book I'm sure you've heard of.... The Tao of JKD.. written by Bruce Lee.

Read it and you'll see that he bases a lot of his fight philosphy on economy of motion and center line mechanics. Now, bruce was a guy that liked to emphasize adaptability and general MMA type concepts.. so if the only actual mechanics he would push forward are WC concepts.. that says a lot about WC.

Bruce also encouraged sensitivity drills, wooden dummy, and all the typical WC traning components. He figured out what was being discussed in these forums a long time ago:

That in order to be good at fighting, you have to fight either in real street fights or full-power with pads. WSL fought people.. JKD people spar full contact.

Now if you want to get specific,.. here are some of technique (ahhh I hate that word) similarities:

1. Straight lead punch from the elbow
2. Intercepting punches (WC calls it "pak")
3. Pulling (WC calls it "lop") and trapping
4. Fencing-like footwork

Bruce added backhands, savate kicks, and the general concept of *adding ***** as time goes by.
