WINSLOW -- This weekend students from Huard's Ju-Jitsu & Karate dropped by the Bangor Mall armed with more than $10,000, all of which they gave to charity.
More specifically the students donated a check for $10,729 to the Children's Miracle Network, a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving lives of seriously ill children by raising funds and awareness for 170 children's hospitals throughout North America.
Huard's and its students have been strong supporters of the organization the last three years. The martial arts school has used its annual Battle of Maine martial arts championships as a major fund-raising vehicle for the Children's Miracle Network.
"It is something we are going to try to do each year with the tournament," Mark Huard of Huard's said. "It makes (our students) understand it's not always going to be just me, me, me, and gives them the satisfaction of helping out other people."
Huard said students have worked harder each year to raise money.
This year's total is more then $4,000 greater than a year ago, he said.
He credits the business community for its increased commitment to the cause as well.
"It seems to go better every year," he said, "and a lot of the area businesses really supported the kids in giving pledges and donations, and that's what helped us raise more funds this year."
Stephanie Lamanteer, a Huard's student who attends Waterville Junior High School, earned the most pledge money, collecting $1,300.
But many other students from the martial arts school made major contributions, including the following: Logan and Spencer Miranda of Winslow ($400), Bill Edmunds-Francis of Fairfield ($275), Amber Bourassa of Winslow ($193), Dylan Brown of Winslow ($180), Casey and Lindsey Cairnie of Waterville ($156.50) and Alex Watrous of Pittsfield ($115).
