Last Friday night, at the Lakeland Civic Center in Florida, there was an MMA event. Although I couldn't attend due to a local charity event, some friends came back with some great stories from the show. Apparently although there were supposed to be 8 fights, there were only 5 and a crowd of 300 or so. The fights were by all accounts action packed, however one in particular stood out.
I'm trying to dig up any video or proof of this, but supposedly a fighter from New York came down for the event. He had no corner or second so he was given one. The corner asked this fighter what he knew...and the fighter replied, "I am a Taekwondo Champion". So the corner told him to use crazy kicks.
According to my buddies who were there, the guy gets in the ring and about 5 to 10 seconds in throws a reverse, spinning heel kick directly to the temple of his opponent and KO's him.
This story is coming from someone who I trust implicity but I'm trying to dig up hard proof or corresponding statements for this.

It can happen.
If you whip your leg at someone's head fast enough, there's half a chance it's gonna connect. As the quality of opponents increases, this becomes more difficult...but it happens.
If you've got the skills to do it, "kick to the head" can work.
Good for him.

Watch the Sabaki Challenge around '93.
Pat Smith steps on the runway, does a sidekick followed up with a spinning heel kick. KO's his opponent off the runway about 5 seconds into the match. It was so fast that nobody was really paying attention or ready to catch the guy.
Was fuckin awesome. You expected to see a slugest of body punches and low kicks. And a TKD guy comes in and lands a perfect spinning heel kick to the temple.

I had a guy nail me in the head with a spinning back kick... but then I shot in, took him down, mounted him, hit him and leg locked him in like 35 seconds.

TKD kicks are effective, and powerful. the power is generated through speed, not power, like in MT kicks. my friend actually had his face broken by a reverse hook kick. (directly below his right eye, sorry i don't know what its called.)
Just because most TKD players suck, doesn't mean all of them do

I have the Pat Smith KO somewhere.
And I have another spinning heel kick KO win in a MMA setting.
These things can happen.

Who was the first guy who said "Low percentage moves become high percentage once you forget about them?"
I don't think anyone is surprised that getting hit in the side of the head with a heel kick hurts. It just so happens it's not horribly difficult to avoid. A lot of damaging moves aren't horribly difficult to avoid. But I still bet most of us here at least get some practice with spinning and head level kicks because if someone leaves themself open for a move then that move is no longer low percentage.

Ah yes, power isn't generated from power. It's all so clear!

Yeh, that was rather dumb. The power of muay thai kicks is generated from power?
well the thing is... i am functionally retarded, occasionally. i meant strength, as in muscles. (at least i think that is what i meant)

I disagree with your opinion of the Muay Thai kick.

power = force
No.
Power
= work / time
= force * distance / time
= mass * acceleration * distance / time
or in SI units...
Watts
= Joules / second
= Newton * meters / second
= kilogram * meters squared / second cubed
