So yesterday me and KumaOni had a mini-throwdown at his friend's house. He had a pretty good setup there, about 20 square feet of mats.
To start me and Kuma did some grappling to submission. About halfway through he had me in a nice pin in side control (Kuma, your judo serves you well, especially in side mount), but after a while I recovered my guard and sunk in the guillotine. (We got this part on his camcorder, but it's on tape; I don't have any equipment that converts tape to digital, and I don't know if KumaOni does).
Then we did some technique exchange. Kuma taught me some judo throws and I helped him with his leg takedowns. Then we did some 'takedowns only grappling' (after someone hit the ground, we got back up and started again). Here I got a single, maybe a double, I'm not sure. Kuma got a couple good ones (I don't remeber exactly which or how many). My best one (wish we got it on tape) was a sweet outside leg trip from a bodylock.
We did more tech. exchange and then went into some light contact standup (no headshots). You were't too bad here either, Kuma. Just keep sparring with your friends, and try upping the contact level some more. Also think of getting boxing gloves and head gear.
We did some upright wrestling for the head clinch and the body lock, then I think the last thing we did was put on the headgear and grappling gloves and did some more serious standup sparring (this time with headshots). Kuma, you kept your hands up pretty good for a bunjinkan guy ;) I caught you with that kick to the head while you were coming in a at a low level. Careful about that, and keep your head up. I don't think there's any reason to have your head down there unless you're going for a takedown.
Anyway, that was pretty much it. Maybe you should find out if your friend could host the next Vancouver (sortuv) Throwdown.
