I have been known to take vitamin S every once in a while. Maybe 2 times a year or so.

FD-"HAHA! This thread gave me a good laugh. My step father have been drinking like 3 to 5 whey protein, taking lot of pills, and other stuff for past 3 months. He plan onto go to gym and excrises but he always put it off and stay home and sit on his ass, looking for best way to gain muscle on internet. "

tell him to stop wasting his money

Phrost-"I take suppliments because I both don't have the time to, and really cannot afford to eat pure steak 3 times a day, along with several pounds of assorted fruits and vegetables to get the same ammount of vitamins, minerals, and proteins that I can get in taking a few pills and tossing some powder in a blender with ice and fruit."

damn right. Whey protein supplements give you the protein without the fats, which is why some people do supplements.

"But I've got both a family, a job, and a hell of a training schedule I need to maintain, so it wouldn't work for me. Not to mention that I don't want to have to deal with the byproducts of eating so much food when I can take a few pills and save myself a few hours of reading time in the bathroom each day."

few hours!! OH GOD!!

ever heard of McDonalds,
a lot of people, for whatever reason (yes i know some are legitimate) do not have time to properly prepare a meal and will therefore just do out to fastfood and/or get a microwave oven dinner

"My point is that you don't get results with out putting in work."

That is what I'm saying too, but you're missing a point. I'm applying it too everything, not just working out in the gym.

Working out is work, yes. Likewise, eating right is not effortless. It takes work to eat right. Suppliments avoid that work. It's cutting corners.

i do believe it is "supplements"
are you dissing my vitamins?

according to dudes like Will Brink, you DO NOT get the nutrition you need from your regular diet. Vitamins SUPPLEMENTS will help that. Also for pro lifters who may compete, additional protein is needed for constant muscle growth without the high intake of fat.

don't do it if you don't like it but it works

And from an unlikely source, PizDoff has brought up pivotal question in this discussion:

Can you get what you 'need' from regular food alone?

I say yes.

Piz Doff- "Freddy- what was your daily dosage of creatine and the other stuff?"

I was taking about 5 grams once in the morning and once at night. And on heavy days I would take it right after workout. So about 25 gram a day. I also went on a loading phase. I forget what amount I was taking but it wasnt 20-30 grams.
I acnt say about PeeDee but he said that he had kidney stones and the Doctor suspect it was because he was taking creatine everyday for about a year.
I wish the company would explain possibly any side effects or level of risk for taking the supplements. I guess they just wanted to make money and couldnt bother with it.
I could only guess that the creatine is hard on one's liver. Your right about that.

Done rationally the ill effects of supplements can be easily avoided. Basically do about half of what the labels recommend (except maybe for protein) and avoid a loading phase. If you're looking to make gains in the end you'll actually save money on supplements as opposed to the amount of food you'd otherwise have to consume. Additionally the gains you make with most will be retained unlike with steroids. Testosterone supplements would be the exception to this and as stated by someone else also pose the risk that your own body's production will fall off.

Supplements can be a great boon but may affect different people differently. I personally break out on my back a lot anyway and creatine exacerbated this, a trade off I wasn't really willing to make.

I’m not taking anything right now but am a big fan of Metrx’s proteins. The chocolate actually tastes good! One of the biggest problems with many protein powders (particularly soy ones) is that they taste like ****. In this case you really get what you pay for.

EAS also makes something that I think is called Betagen, which has HMB, Creatine (at a sane level) and glutamine and some other AAs. If I remember right its water-soluble and the orange tasted pretty good. I took it for a while and got at least a placebo effect <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>.
The only downside was that it’s outrageously expensive. On the other hand it’s probably got all the supplements anyone really needs.

15 grams a day? I've heard recommended 5 grams a day. I'm not gonna do a loading phase.

I think I'll do the ProLab creatine and some Whey protein as well.

Hah! Finally proof that my all doughnut diet is good. Plus now I'm well insulated.

I've found that cost makes a big difference on this one. There are tons of knockoff proteins on the market and most of them taste like ****. Metrx and EAS both seem to try and make sure that you don't shot yourself to get rid of the taste after taking their products. As said I've always liked the metrx chocolate flavored protein powder (i'll look up the actual name).

Yes, I do know a vegetarian body builder. He out rep'd everyone in the weight room at low weights and changed the eating habits of one of our brown belts. The br. b. was a power lifter and under this guy's guidance changed his diet, started running, and added serious stretching. I saw him go to a more lean articulated body and gained a lot of speed and kicked me in the head. I said what the hell, you're too tight to go high and he told me about his new program. At the last party we were at he was drinking a tall tomato juice-looked like a bloody mary but he'd also given up booze.

A question. Eating a high protien diet will cause kidney problems. Will an increase in water help prevent stones?

I guess that's the trade off, out repping at low weights versus higher weight strength.

The "atkins diet" overloads your kidneys and increased water consumption will help off set that. Eating a lot of protein in conjunction with decent amounts of carbs and fat lessens these problems (so I hear).

End all be all: Drink a lot.

Its your choice if that's water or not.
