This choke is new to me. It looks good but has anyone used it before?

Looks like something you can just back-roll out of, but there's only one way to find out.

I've used it. It's works okay in no-gi, but it's not really a high-percentage move against good guys.

To escape the guy needs to turn in towards you and put you back in guard, or keep spinning his legs and follow you. It's a hard choke to get on a slippery mat.

looks like a paper cutter (wind choke) without the gi, never tried it no-gi

Does anyone know what that hand grip is about? I cant imagen the thumb being placed in between the fingers by accident but then again it seems relitively pointless to me.

The hand grip is a method that Gene LeBell uses. I use it myself because I find it allows my hands to get into that position, but the thumb between the fingers makes it a more solid and dependable grip.

You can see this and some other grips briefly explained in the Look Inside the Book feature for one of his books on Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/reader/0967654319/ref=sib_dp_pt/002-7021177-5000851#reader-page

Just flip through the pages of goofy stuff first.

Cheers, so would you recomend his books?

Stephan Kesting of GrappleArts.com recommends it:

And I've never seen him give anything but good advice. I can say it wouldn't be the first thing on his list that I'd buy.

I'd like to point out that this choke comes from catch wrestling which seems to rely on pure fairy dust. I'm not saying they don't work, just that you need a lot of fairy dust to back them up.

Hmm, a fighters notebook is £115 over here thats about $230 u.s. and I've got a fair few of the others, maybe Kodokan judo is the way to go.

I saw an eddie bravo highlight real and he taps out a bunch of people using that move. In that picture it looks like a choke but when he does it it looks like a kneck crank.

You're thinking of "The Twister". Quite a bit different than what that picture is showing.

Actually this choke is not a catch wrestling choke and has been around even BJJ for a long time. I'm not sure of the exact origin. I learned it over eight years ago from the Machado's and in a no gi scenario it is a fairly effective choke that can be applied quickly and easily. Not to mention it chokes pretty damn quick when done properly with the blade of your wrist bones and the right pressure. As was previously mentioned however there is a relatively simple escape but you have to be quick. I've tapped a lot of people with this and even though I know the counter have been tapped with it too.

Just checked my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Submission Grappling Techniques book by Royler Gracie and this is on page 70. It has a good breakdown of how to apply it as well. I just bought that book as a early present to myself and it's pretty good by the way.

Peace!

Another good way out is to use your right arm (as applied in this pic) to push his left elbow over your head. It's hard to see it here from this angle but it works fairly well as an escape.

This choke is kinda like a MT grip (plum) only they are off to your side.
