Protesters 'shed tears' at U.S. Embassy in Tokyo

Mainichi Shimbun, March 20, 2003

Protesters participate in a "die in" in front of the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.

Hours after the U.S. and Britain launched an attack on Iraq, hundreds of people participated in an anti-war drive in front of the U.S. Embassy in central Tokyo Thursday. Some 300 people gathered in front of the embassy at 6:30 p.m., a time set by citizen groups for people to "come on the first day of war." Some of them shed a few tears while feeling their efforts over the past several days were to no avail.

The citizens included some 30 members of the non-governmental organization "Peace Boat," who lay on the ground for five minutes in protest against the war. Hidetoshi Oguri, a company employee from Chiba, has lodged protests against attacks on Iraq with the U.S. Embassy more than 10 times since last year.

"Why couldn't we stop the war? Everybody in the world wanted to avoid it." Oguri said.

In Nagasaki, Mayor Iccho Ito called on both the U.S. and Japanese governments to make efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Iraqi crisis. "War, which I feared most, has become a reality," Ito said. In Tokyo, Qasim Shakir, charge d' affaires at the Iraqi Embassy in Japan, said that the U.S.-led attacks on his country violated the United Nations charter. He added that any problems should be solved peacefully. Although many people around the country criticized the U.S. and Britain for staging war, the three ruling coalition parties stood united for Washington and London, stressing the importance of its alliance with Washington.

Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi announced that Japan would donate some 5 million dollars to the UNHCR and UNICEF as funds to help Iraqi refugees. A medical team will be dispatched to Syria to take care of Iraqi refugees.

10 more 'human shields' leave for Iraq

Mainichi Shimbun, March 20, 2003

NARITA -- Ten Japanese men and women left Japan Thursday for Iraq to serve as "human shields" against the U.S.-led war to topple Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Yasuyuki Aizawa, who heads the 10-people team, had already visited Iraq in February. "I'm extremely worried about the Iraqi people I met (in February)," said Aizawa, 31, a company executive from Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, at Narita airport before leaving.

Foreign Ministry officials said there were 26 Japanese people staying in Iraq as of Wednesday. Of them, at least six are there as human shields against the Anglo-American attacks.

Women busted for unqualified colon cleansing

Mainichi Shimbun, Jan. 15, 2003

A Tokyo beauty salon operator has been busted for conducting unqualified "colon cleansing" on hundreds of women, it was leaned Wednesday.

Kiyomi Anzai, the operator of the "Grace" beauty shop, reportedly pocketed some 88 million yen in three years since opening her shop in Tokyo in October 1999. A former Grace employee, Katsue Saito, was also arrested alongside Anzai, both on charges of breaking the Medical Practitioners Law because only doctors are allowed to professionally insert an instrument into a person's anus, a Metropolitan Police Department spokesman said. Police said 43-year-old Anzai advertised the colon cleansing service on the Internet after opening the business with 54-year-old Saito.

The two women's service was highly popular, with hundreds of women from across the nation becoming repeat customers of Grace. Investigators believe the pair carried out the "hydro colon cleansing" around 3,800 times. Colon cleansing is popular among women because it reportedly eliminates conditions such as constipation, fatigue, headaches, poor skin and blemishes by clearing fecal matter from bowels.

Man uses cell phone to take snap inside schoolgirl's skirt

Mainichi Shimbun, Dec. 1, 2002

KASHIWA, Chiba -- A man has been arrested for using his camera-equipped mobile phone to take a photo of the inside of a schoolgirl's skirt as she rode an escalator here, police said.

Toyokazu Hamano, 40, a company employee from Noda, Chiba Prefecture, was arrested for breaking a Chiba Prefectural Government law forbidding people from creating a public nuisance. Hamano admits to the allegations.

Police said Hamano was riding behind the girl on an escalator at JR Kashiwa Station when he took out his mobile phone, held it underneath the girl's skirt and took a photo. The girl was alerted to his presence by the noise emitted by the phone camera's shutter. She turned around to catch Hamano with his hands between her legs.

Man dies after several cars plow over him

Mainichi Shimbun, Dec. 1, 2002

ATSUGI, Kanagawa -- A man has died after at least six cars struck him on a road here early Sunday before all of the vehicles drove off without checking up on his welfare, police said. A handful of cruel drivers slammed into Shoichi Sato, but continued on their way and left him for dead. By the time one driver stopped to check up on Sato, he had already died.

Police said marks on the dead man's body indicate that he was hit by at least six different vehicles, a minimum two of which appear to have been station wagons. Investigators said the cars appear to have smashed into Sato as he crossed a busy road and continued to slam into him in the heavy traffic.

Investigators are searching for all those drivers who slammed into Sato.

Teacher exploits disabled to shoot up girl's dress

Mainichi Shimbun, Oct. 1, 2002

KAWASAKI -- An employee of a social welfare organization entrusted with raising awareness of the disabled has been arrested after filmed up the dress of a schoolgirl he blindfolded so she'd know what it was like to be without sight, police said Tuesday. Hidekazu Abe, 35, was arrested for violating a Kanagawa Prefectural Government ordinance aimed at providing a healthy environment for youth.

Investigators suspect that Abe arranged classes specifically so he could take indecent videos of schoolgirls.

Police said that Abe held a class for schoolgirls at a Kawasaki hospital on Aug.11 where he promised to teach them what it was like to be blind. He dressed up a 17-year-old schoolgirl in a miniskirt and blindfolded her. He then dropped an item onto the floor and instructed her to pick it up without bending her knees. He then shoved a video camera up her dress and filmed her as she bent over. The blindfold of a schoolgirl standing beside the pair was slightly askew and she noticed Abe filming up the girl's skirt. She reported what she had seen to the police.

Abe held a course this summer advising on caring for the elderly. A group of schoolgirls enrolled in the course. He handed pamphlets to each of the schoolgirls encouraging them to attend a special course he was offering on experiencing life while blind. Four girls took part in his course on Aug. 10 and 11, each of whom, police fear, may have been targeted by the lecherous lecturer.

Man with identity disorder seeks election as woman

Mainichi Shimbun, March 25, 2003

A Tokyo man with gender identity disorder is seeking to run in an upcoming local assembly race as a woman. Aya Kamikawa, 35, who is registered as a man in his family registry, has asked Tokyo's Setagaya Ward Election Administration Committee to allow him to run in the April 27 ward assembly election as a woman.

"I would like to represent not only people with the same handicap but also the weak in a bid to trigger social reform," Kamikawa said as he explained the motives behind his decision to run in the election. The election administration committee will consult the Ministry of Public Management and the Tokyo Metropolitan Election Administration Committee over whether to comply with his request before the official campaign period begins on April 20, officials said.

Ministry officials said candidates in public office elections should, in principle, register their gender as stated in their family registries. They added that it is unprecedented that a candidate with gender identity disorder states a gender different from that in his or her family registries in filing a candidacy. Kamikawa, whose real name is Aya Miura, decided to live as a woman when he was 27 because he could not endure living "as if he were acting the part of a fictitious character." In 1998, Kamikawa was officially diagnosed by a medical institution as suffering from gender identity disorder.

The ward assembly election is to be held as part of the second round of the unified local elections on April 27.

Bungling burglar pinched after returning to pick up lingerie

Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Jan. 17, 2002

KOFU -- A man has been arrested after he returned to a house he burgled to pick up women's underwear that he ordered his victim to leave at her doorstep, it was learned Thursday. The burglar, Mizuki Sato, sneaked into a house in Shikishima, Yamanashi Prefecture, last November and stole items worth around 60,000 yen, including a bag and women's underwear, police said.

Sato, a 40-year-old company employee, reportedly found a note written with his victim's mobile phone number. On the morning of Dec. 7, Sato called the married woman and demanded, "Leave your lingerie on your doorstep." He came round to the house to pick up the item that afternoon and was detained by waiting police officers. Sato has ransacked at least 15 houses in Yamanashi Prefecture since 1998, netting items worth around 12 million yen in total, police said.

He reportedly admitted to police that he had demanded his female victims to give up their underwear when he got hold of their phone numbers.

'Cruel' citizens demand bite of beached whales

1-20-2002

OURA, Kagoshima -- Local authorities here have been flooded with calls from citizens demanding the right to eat 13 sperm whales that beached and died here during the week, the Mainichi learned Saturday. Some Oura residents have turned up with chainsaws at the seaside area where the whales beached in the hope of cutting off some whale meat, which is regarded as a delicacy in Japan.

Whaling experts have also urged that instead of donating the skeletons to aquariums as planned, the meat and teeth of the huge mammals should be extracted for commercial purposes. Oura Municipal Government and Fisheries Agency officials are urging people not to eat the beached whales for fear that their carcasses could be carrying diseases. Local officials said that when over a dozen whales beached in the town in 1935 they were carved up and served to citizens to eat. Since the whales beached here earlier in the week, the government has received a number of calls from citizens wanting to know when the mammals will be dished up. Some residents armed with chainsaws turned up at the beach on Friday night in the hope of getting a prime cut.

Only 10 sperm whales may be caught each year for research purposes. Shigetoshi Nishiwaki of The Institute of Cetacean Research said whales can be enormously profitable. Skin carries a wholesale price of more than 5,000 yen per kilogram. Tail parts cost 10,000 yen per kilogram, while the whole tail can command 2 to 3 million yen. Whale teeth are also extremely valuable for ornamental purposes, with some willing to pay over 10 million yen for a set. Oura officials said they have received calls from fishing companies asking when the whale meat will be auctioned off or offering to pay millions of yen to take care of the carcasses, presumably to sell the meat. Officials said the companies were told the meat was not fit for human consumption.

Oura has posted guards around the dead whales to prevent people from stealing their meat. The whale carcasses will be moved to a beach in the neighboring city of Kaseda, where they will be buried until only their skeletons remain. From there, the skeletons will be given to aquariums. "Once upon a time people would jump for joy when a whale was beached," Oura Mayor Teruyuki Maeno said. "Now, the whales just bring trouble."

Slain man's body ignored

Mainichi Shimbun, Jan. 22, 2002

MISATO, Saitama -- Numerous passersby ignored the body of a man lying in a bloody pool during broad daylight until one finally alerted authorities, police said. Shigeru Takahashi, 27, unemployed of no fixed address, appeared to have been killed in a different place and either dragged or crawled to the Misato roadside where his body lay when it was found.

It appears Takahashi had been slashed in the arm with a sword and died through a massive loss of blood Monday. Police said they believed the chances Takahashi had been carried by somebody else to where his body was found were higher because he was not wearing shoes.

Man robs 2 Saitama shops with tree branch

Mainichi Shimbun, Jan. 29, 2002

MOROYAMA, Saitama -- A tree branch-wielding man apparently robbed two convenience stores here Monday night, local police said Tuesday.

A man who covered his mouth with a towel stormed into the Saito-Moroyama outlet of Family Mart in the Nagase district of Moroyama shortly before 10 p.m. Monday. He threatened an 18-year-old part-time employee with a tree branch, and demanded money. "I'm a robber. Give me money," the man was quoted as saying. He then grabbed some 180,000 yen in cash that had been kept in a cash register and fled the scene.

About 15 minutes earlier, a man holding a tree branch threatened a 20-year-old part-timer at another convenience store located about 2.5 kilometers northeast of the Family Mart outlet in a bid to steal money. However, the robber ran away from the store without stealing anything because the employee fought back. The employee suffered slight injuries on the right arm, police said.

The robber was about 165 to 175 centimeters tall and appeared to be aged between 25 and 35 years old.

Berserk killer gets death

Mainichi Shimbun, Jan. 18, 2002

A man Friday received the death sentence for a berserk rampage on Tokyo's daylight streets that killed two and injured another six. Hiroshi Zota was found guilty of murder and attempted murder and ordered to the gallows by the Tokyo District Court.

"It was an indiscriminate act of murder aimed at scaring society and resulting from frustrations that your efforts had not been rewarded," Presiding Judge Ichitaro Ono ruled as he sentenced the 26-year-old to death. Zota, a native of Okayama Prefecture, had pleaded guilty to the 1999 killings, but argued that he was not of sound mind at the time and sought to avoid playing the ultimate price for his crime. Court records showed prosecutors proved Zota's careful planning of the Sept. 8, 1999, rampage, contradicting his claims of insanity. Prosecutors argued that Zota had never showed signs of fearing crowds before unleashing his onslaught and he had purchased the kitchen knife used in the attacks immediately before he carried them out.

He also coolly discarded the knife when its tip chipped off, and continued his attack with a hammer.

Medical experts and psychiatric tests also found that Zota was of sound mind. Prosecutors argued that Zota was motivated to slay indiscriminately because his hard work had not been rewarded. They said a prank phone call made to him triggered his violent rage at society.

Zota was convicted for racing through the streets of the busy Ikebukuro streets of Tokyo's Toshima-ku while brandishing a knife he used to stab anybody who came within his reach. His berserk rampage claimed the lives of two housewives and left another six people injured.

Jobless man punches crying baby into coma

Mainichi Shimbun, March 27, 2003

SAITAMA -- A 21-year-old unemployed man was arrested for punching his three-month-old son into a coma because he wouldn't stop crying, police said. Takaharu Inoue, who lived with his live-in partner and the son in an abandoned car, has been slapped with charges of inflicting injuries.

He struck the son in the car at about 10 p.m. Tuesday in a disused car yard in Showa, Saitama Prefecture, police officers said. "When I tried to give him milk, he just kept crying," Inoue was quoted as saying. "So I got angry and hit him."

The next morning, Inoue woke up to find the baby unconscious and called an ambulance. Inoue's lover was arrested four days before the attack for shoplifting at a supermarket in Kasukabe, Saitama Prefecture.
