I'm not in it anymore. And never will be again, but the situation is SO much more complicated than being a "baby-killer" or a superhero. There's no morality in it. It's all ethos. There are no spiritual lessons to be learned or deep truths or any of that ****. You keep yourself alive and get your mission done so you don't have to try again. Sometimes it's right, sometimes it's wrong. But someone has to volunteer to get the work done.

Mobile phone chitchat sparks fatal bashing

Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 1, 2003

A Tokyo student was arrested Saturday for fatally bashing an unemployed man after the victim chided him for chatting on his mobile phone, police said. Noriya Okubo, a Rissho University senior from Meguro-ku, was charged with inflicting injuries resulting in death when he turned himself in at the Osaki Police Station, accompanied by his parents.

When Okubo struck 53-year-old Yutaka Tanaka in the head at an underground pathway at the university's campus in Shinagawa-ku on Jan. 25, the victim fell to the ground, hitting the back of his head, officers said. Tanaka died early Friday. Okubo, 23, admitted to the allegations. "When I was talking on my mobile phone, he came up to me and whacked me in the stomach," Okubo told the officers. "While he was holding me by the collar, I beat him once. I feel sorry for the victim."

Okubo said he decided to turn himself in to the police when he read about Tanaka's death in an evening newspaper on Friday.

Well, Bush was elected. Until we admit this we can't go about fixing our incredibly fucked up electoral system...Oh wait! That can't happen because the Constitution is sacrosanct. But wait! It's been changed before! Wait again! That was different....aaah!

Carpenter shot dead while hunting wild boar

Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 3, 2003

SAYO, Hyogo -- A carpenter was shot to death in a mountain forest here while hunting wild boar on Sunday afternoon, police said Monday. Police are questioning eight friends who went hunting with the victim, suspecting one of them may have mistakenly shot him.

At around 3 p.m., Sunday, Yoshiki Yamamura, 53, from Himeji, Hyogo Prefecture, was found lying unconscious in a mountain forest in the Toyofuku district of Sayo by one of the eight friends, investigators said. He was rushed to hospital where he died three hours later from brain injuries caused by a bullet shot to the head.

Student tries to kill teacher over pierced ear roasting

Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Feb. 4, 2003

KOBE -- A 14-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday for trying to kill his junior high school teacher with a baseball bat because he scolded him for getting his ears pierced. "I really wanted to kill him," the second-grade student at a municipal junior high school in Tatsuno, Hyogo Prefecture, was quoted by police as saying.

The 14-year-old reportedly had his ears pierced in late January but was rapped by his homeroom teacher for doing so. However, the boy responded to the criticism in an aggressive manner and a male teacher joined in the argument and gave him a severe tongue-lashing before letting him go. On Monday afternoon, the student turned up to the schoolyard where the male teacher was organizing a training session for members of a school baseball club.

"Who the hell did you think you are telling me off like that the other day?" the boy reportedly shouted as he started an argument with the teacher. During the confrontation, the student picked up a metal baseball bat and clobbered the teacher over the head. The teacher was hit in the temple but fortunately was not seriously injured. Police arrested the 14-year-old in the predawn hours of Tuesday after receiving complaints from the school.

Touchy taxman gives schoolgirl taxing time

Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 5, 2003

GIFU -- A tax inspector who fondled a schoolgirl's buttocks for about 10 minutes on a packed commuter train has been arrested, police said. Masayoshi Okumura, the 55-year-old inspector with the Nagoya Regional Taxation Bureau, was arrested for breaking a Gifu Prefectural Government ordinance that forbids people from creating a public nuisance.

Okumura denies the allegations. Police said the taxman spent about 10 minutes rubbing the buttocks of a 16-year-old girl who was riding the same train as him on Tuesday evening. When the train arrived at JR Nemoto Station, the girl squealed in shock and Okumura ran away. However, an officer on the same train placed him under arrest.

Workers blasted for burning dynamite

Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 10, 2003

NAKATSU, Oita -- Workers at a construction firm got a shock early Monday after several sticks of dynamite they tried to burn with other rubbish exploded, shattering windows of nearby houses. Police said workers from the construction firm, based in the Kaku district of Nakatsu, put five or six sticks of dynamite they had decided to dispose of in with a load of rubbish that was being burned at the firm at about 7:20 a.m. Monday.

The dynamite soon exploded, smashing the windows of seven houses belonging to residents living near the facility.

"We thought that if the detonators were taken out they wouldn't explode, and just burn normally, so we put them in with the other rubbish," a firm official was quoted as saying. The dynamite that exploded was normally used for blasting work, police said. Police plan to question firm officials on suspicion of violating the Explosives Control Law.

Arrested killer admits mutilating second victim

Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 10, 2003

A man arrested for brutally stabbing an elderly man to death has admitted killing a second victim, saying he wanted to "mutilate" someone, police said Friday. The 29-year-old man, Tomohiro Fujii, was served a fresh arrest warrant for the killing of unemployed man Koichi Tamada, 67, who died after being brutally stabbed on a road in Tokyo's Kita-ku in September 2000.

"I wanted to mutilate and kill someone, and when I was looking for a victim, I found Tamada, who was drunk, and stabbed him with a knife," police quoted Fujii as saying. "If I wasn't arrested I might have wanted to kill other people later, and I'm relieved to be arrested now."

Investigators said Fujii stabbed Tamada 13 times in the face and chest outside Tamada's municipally owned apartment at about 1:40 a.m. on Sept. 5, 2000. Fujii was arrested in September 2002 over a separate killing in which 76-year-old unemployed man Toraichi Saito was stabbed to death while walking in a park in Tokyo's Itabashi-ku in July that year. Police noticed that there were several similarities between the two killings: both victims were elderly men, both had multiple stab wounds, and money had not been taken from them in either case. When they questioned Fujii over the killing of Tamada, he reportedly admitted to the crime.

Police said Fujii's testimony matched the details of the crime, and a knife that they seized from his apartment matched that used in Tamada's killing. When questioned over Saito's murder, Fujii reportedly told police that he had chosen a weak victim.

"I had a wild urge to kill someone and I went for an elderly person who was weaker than me," police quoted Fujii as saying. He reportedly told police that he had killed another person because he was not immediately arrested after he murdered Tamada.

Kids find school toilets a load of crap

Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 15, 2003

Nearly half Japan's elementary school children do all they can to avoid having a poop in their school toilets, according to a shocking survey by toilet manufacturer Toto Co. Of the roughly 1,000 children Toto surveyed, 12.1 percent said they would not have a poop at school under any circumstances, while another 37.1 percent replied that they do everything possible to avoid school washrooms.

Toto is urging schools to impart to children the importance of being able to freely use school toilets. "Holding off from using the toilets could lead to problems such as chronic constipation," a Toto spokesman said.

Among the reasons children gave for shunning school toilets was that they are too dirty, they can be embarrassing and other children tease them once the doors are closed. It was more likely for older children to be afraid of school toilets, with 51 percent of sixth graders refusing to use them as opposed to just 36 percent of first graders.

Styles have also been suggested as a cause of the aversion to school toilets. Although 96.8 percent of elementary schools have Japanese-style squat toilets, they can only be found in 9.4 percent of family homes, where Western commodes dominate. Toto officials suggested schools could ease the toilet phobia by training children on how to use squat toilets.

Pervert uses tear gas in futile attempt to flee

Mainichi Shimbun, Feb. 15, 2003

A man has been arrested after he used tear gas in a futile attempt to escape from a Tokyo video store where he had been caught filming up a woman's skirt, police said Saturday. Hideki Kato, 38, a company employee from Okegawa, Saitama Prefecture, was arrested for inflicting bodily injury. He admits to the allegations.

Police said that Kato used his camera-equipped mobile phone to film up the skirt of a 20-year-old woman who was browsing through videos and CDs in the shop. A store employee noticed Kato and screamed out at him. Kato ran toward the employee, whipped out a can of tear gas and sprayed it into his face before racing toward the store exit.

However, a security guard and another male employee of the store noticed what had happened and overwhelmed Kato. With the help of several other customers, the pair held Kato until officers arrived on the scene minutes later.

Anti-sexual harassment professor quits after touching up student

Mainichi Shimbun, March 18, 2003

KYOTO -- A Bukkyo University assistant professor who headed the sexual harassment office has resigned in disgrace after touching up a female student during a study camp, officials of the school said.

The 45-year-old teacher accompanied more than 10 students on the study trip to Kyoto in early February. After drinking at a party on Feb. 3, the teacher took a female student to a room and rubbed her up when they were alone, said officials of the university in the ancient city's Kita-ku.

He confessed his wrongdoing to his boss at the faculty three weeks later, which prompted the university to set up an investigation.

Amid questioning, he submitted his resignation on March 8. University officials have apologized to the woman.

Shop owner fatally mows down two girls

Mainichi Shimbun, March 18, 2003

UTSUNOMIYA -- A convenience store operator was arrested Tuesday after he fatally slammed his car into two junior high schools girls on a dark road and fled, police said.

Ibaraki Prefectural Police were hunting the driver of the silver-colored car that fled the scene of the accident at about 7 p.m., Monday, in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, when Noriyuki Taniguchi suddenly turned himself in. Accompanied by a friend, Taniguchi, 38, surrendered at a local police station early Tuesday after learning on the radio that the police were looking for the car that hit the two girls.

Taniguchi, however, has denied the charges of fleeing the scene.

"I thought I hit a guardrail," officers quoted him as saying. Officers described the victims as Rie Suzuki, 14, and Ayumi Soeya, 14, both students at a local junior high school. The girls died of heavy injuries to their bodies.
