Wasco officer arrested on molestation, sex with minor charges

A correctional officer at Wasco State Prison has been arrested on charges of child molestation and unlawful sex with a minor, Bakersfield police reported Tuesday. Don Lee Lanier, 33, was arrested Monday after the family of the 15-year-old victim asked to speak with him at University Park, where police were waiting for him at 1:30 p.m., Detective Mary DeGeare said.
Lanier is the victim's karate instructor, and they had begun communicating by e-mail, police said. On Monday shortly after midnight, Lanier asked the girl through an instant message to meet him at Eissler School, which she did, police said. The two engaged in consensual sex acts in Lanier's car, police said. The girl's parents had become suspicious of the communication between Lanier and their daughter, police said. After reading subsequent communications between the two after the offense, the parents reported the matter to the police.
