I'm a geek... but I do computers and networks and scripting and programming. I'm not really that hot on computers games. I like car racing stuff until my 11 yo beats my ass but it is mainly techno-geek stuff that I like.

So, what do RPG'ers do and what is the attraction (http://www.laughingpan.com/geeklog/)? Go down to Deliria: Faerie Tales for a New Millennium, what actually happens with this thing? I honestly don't understand. This is not a blast or troll... it is a cry for understanding. What goes on?

Duh? So are you asking what 'real RPGs' are? They aren't computer games at all, for the starters... ;)

& LARPS are entirely different from that stuff again. I mean, I would love to play RPGs again, after a 10+ year break, but I'd never do LARP...

-> Role Playing Games -> book + rules + stuff = basically a combination of a board game and improvised acting.

In case your not sure, LARP=Live Action Role Playing, or we're the gamers all other gamers refuse to associate with. RPGs are cool, though.

The attraction is that you get to create a whole new persona and act it out in a fantastic setting. If you like fantasy novels or movies (LotR) or even other genres (sci-fi, spies, cyberpunk, etc...) and you've thought about how much fun it would be to be a part of those worlds, there is an RPG for you to do that with. The battle can be quite exciting, and so can the roleplaying and intrigue. Give it a shot, you may enjoy it.

Well, I played Diablo II for awhile...and...some Final Fantasy. Though I don't own any of the games, I only play it at friends and stuff. Though that;s about it. I don't really own any RPG's besides D2.

Wait a minute, is this thread about video/computer game RPGs or oldschool pencil and paper RPGs!? There's a big difference.

Hm, well I don't see why we can't talk about both. Personaly I've never played an RPG board game, or with pencil and paper...though, if I get a chance, I'll give it a try. I'm a big fan of the Diplomacy board game.

What's an RPG board game? :P

Umm...I guess....D&D. Or at least I think there is a board game for it...and that should be an RPG...I think.

Yeah, it'd just be called an RPG, not a board game.

I have/had a friend that was went away to college and LARPed. All of us (my friends and I) still make fun of him for this. To clarify exactly what calibur idiots we are dealing with here, the same people that LARP also invented games called "Ball Pipe" and "Plastic Bag". Both of which are stupid beyond all rational levels.

There are stories to both of them according to him, but to quickly sum up each:

In ball pipe, you and another male opponent go head to head in what was best described as a "nut joust". You both strap a reasonably long piece of metal pipe onto you naughty bits and PUSH. You might want to reread this, because the brain normally doesn't accept something of that level. The way you "win" is you get the opponent to give up. The real way to win, is not to play at all (thanks war games).

In plastic bag, you do exactly what your mom told you NOT to do when you were little. Put a plastic bag over your head, take deep breaths and see how long it takes for you to pass out. You play against other people. Again, there's no real way to win.

To summarize: LARPing = ungodly stupid.

RPGs can be fun, but don't ever get sucked into larping. EVER

I tihnk the attraction is the fact that you become someone else, role play and interact with people in this 'new life.' In the past I've usually created my characters to be similar to myself, but it still is an escape from reality.

D2 is an "action/RPG".

I think it's a combination of escapism, story telling and socializing that makes pencil and paper RPGs. Sadly, I've had some bad expirences with RPGs, some people just play to have an ego trip and gain power. Not to mentioning constant arguing with the rules as well. RPGs can be lot's of fun, provided you play them with the right people.

I believe that's Real Time.

Last I remember it's like a RTMMORPG.
