That's a quote from Jay, a corrections officer who was attacked at work
last Thursday.
Jay was doing a routine check inside an inmate's cell. He turned his
back to check a jacket that was lying on a stool when he was struck from
behind on the side of the face.
Jay fell to the ground. He thought he had been punched but thought it
was odd that it "burned" so bad.
The inmate jumped on Jay's back and began to strike towards Jay's head.
Jay turtled tight and defended his face with elbow up when he saw the
pool of blood underneath him. He could feel his arm getting sliced and
knew he had to act fast.
He said he got scared for a second thinking he might get killed or had
already been cut bad enough to bleed to death but he then thought to
himself, "Calm down and think".
He reached through his legs looking for the inmates ankle. He said he
was actually able to grab both of his ankles. He said he rolled really
hard and fast into a kneebar and as he did it he actually took the
inmate's ankles out from underneath him.
Jay turned and jumped on top. They scrambled for a bit until Jay was
able to secure a side control and wrestled a "red pen" out of the
inmates hand.
They wrestled some more and the inmate turned over to his stomach and
was able to pull himself up by grabbing a window sill. Jay got
underhooks and kept him pinned against the wall. He was able to work one
arm up and turn the inmate around where he eventually got the cuffs on.
He said the place looked like a murder scene, blood everywhere. The red
pen was later found to have a razor blade fashioned into it.
Jay was disappointed in himself that he "got caught with his pants down"
as he put it but he said he never expected it from this guy.
Other than a nasty face scar going from his eye socket to just
underneath his chin he's ok and told me he'll be "Back at South Shore to
fight another day". SL

Awesome story Matt! Although, quite frankly, I´d rather learn Silat if I expected to be attacked with a knive (the guy would be dead if the blade was larger).

So, this guy was stabbed, multiple times and somehow managed to survive due to the STUPIDITY of the attacker.
I never uderstood guys that don't grasp the "what if's" of something that happens to them.
Glad to hear he survived beacuse they guy had a razor instead of a real knife, but, I don't recommend taking cuts and slashes like that...

No, but he could have drew his kris and stabbed in the inmate's footprints and thus made the inmate die of a curse.

When ever we analyse something like this, we must put ourselves in the role of the ATTACKEr not the defender and we must think, what would we do agaoinst his defense/counters ?

I can say that, with a decent knife, he would be dead.

How do you figure that? It seems like he survived based on the fact that he was able to keep a cool head after being attacked from behind and used his grappling to reverse position and control the attacker. That's due to his training, not the stupidity of the attacker.

In the situation you described nothing would have helped the guy, read my post again Matt. I meant I would rather learn Silat if I feared I would get in a knife FIGHT, since Silat concentrates on that.

Getting stabbed in the back requires no technique whatsoever, I would say.

And I still think the guy managed to survive the first attack because of 1) luck and 2) the size of the blade.

If YOU had a decent knife and KNEW how to use it and someone gave you their back, ie: turtle, what would you do ?

Mind you, I agree BJJ helped him a lot after the first attack, no one is arguing with that. It´s just that, well, it is not knife fighting, and the situation was indeed exceptional (the attacker kept close enough for grappling after attacking).

I'm going to guess that a razor blade strapped to a pen is slightly more limited than a real knife. It doesn't sound like he was able to stab at all.
