... is teh suck :p. seriously, though, if you take away the close hips thingy, do you find you can still use it effectively?
short of jamming their legs and or hips, how do you MT playas prevent hip tosses/sweeps, etc?
should i instead being doing the step-to-knee-rinse-repeat thingy to prevent him from doing anything?
also, how to best mitigate body shots? just throw lots of knees?
thanks.

LOCU5!!!! Come to my school, please? We can teach you all these things that you are always asking questions about. I now you have some sort of loyalty to the school you are in know but you really need to give us a chance.
As far as MT Clinch goes it IS susceptable to hip throws because hip throws aren't allowed in MT. Most people that are good in the clinch know how to hook the leg though to prevent big throws. Also there are alternate grips that can be used to reduce the chance of a big throw.

Also I missed this part the first go 'round. Do you mean body shots with the hands? If so they shouldn't be able to hit you at all if your clinch is good and even if they can reach you there will be NO power. If someone throws a hook in the clinch you need to drill them with a knee and end the fight.

yes, but i seem more open to it on the entry part. though like judo, entering the body is the hard part many times.
i should come to your school some saturday afternoon next month to play, though you are correct, i am happy where i am and with my instructor.
also, do you use the MT clinch to get to a standing guillotine or is this frowned on?

If the other person knows how to clinch you won't get that. Maybe if you double them over with a knee first, maybe.
The MT clinch is for skinny thais in baggy shorts, or for Whiteshark, it is NOT for real men with hair on their chest.
i didn't think canada had any real men, just framerican speaking sissies who hump beavers and herd maple syrup trees...

now back on topic: do you personally like to work a more standard clinch to get to the MT clinch?
the benefit i am seeing in the MT clinch is two-fold:
1) t3h knees
2) head control (and thusly body control)
fair assessment?

hey WS, do you have any insight into why hip throws and hooking the leg and tripping are against the rules in muay thai?
as a sanda guy, i went to train muay thai in thailand, and could never get an answer about it. (i don't speak thai and the trainers don't speak much english so you can imagine the conversations.... "so why no hip throws?" "is a foul" "yes but WHY is it a foul" "no hip throw... it is a foul" repeat ad nauseum.)
it seemed to me that it is seen as "dirty" fighting, but in a style with so few rules i was surprised to say the least.

It's because they WANT the fighters to knee the crap out of each other. It's part of the style and what they want to see. If you allowed those kind of throws it would reduce the number of knees and elbows in the clinch. This would not be good for exciting "Muay Thai" fights. Basically if I know I won't get hip thrown or tripped I can take far bigger risks with my knee shots and to a lesser extent elbows.
That's the best explanation I've ever found.
A good old uchi mata would **** them up royally, that or a chi fart.

that pretty much confirms what i thought, that it makes for a better spectator sport.
fresh back from thailand i was doing clinch drills with one of the shuai jiao instructors at my school, and every time i would try to knee in the clinch he would effortlessly dump me on my ass (ok he would dump me on my ass effortlessly no matter what i did, but it was even easier when i tried to knee him.) of course i am at best mediocre at the MT clinch.

No one ever said Muay Thai was perfect. Throws aren't part of MT, because MT is a sport, and it isn't part of the sport. Just like asking why don't wrestlers use guns? Because it isn't wrestling.
So if a MT player is not going to play by MT rules, and throws are good, he probably can't use strictly MT, either modify some of the current techniques, or learn new ones. Perhaps a greco-roman style clinch, or an arms under-over clinch.
