Clandestine love affair leads to man's drowning

NAGOYA -- A married man has drowned himself at an Aichi Prefecture port, apparently because of an affair he was having with a local woman, police said Monday. The body of the man, whose name is being withheld for privacy reasons, was found floating at a port in Gamagori on Sunday afternoon.

Police said the 52-year-old company employee from Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, had been having an affair with a woman from the neighboring city of Toyota for the past five years. The man was reportedly troubled by his girlfriend's demands to live with him from April this year.

He was last seen alive when he left the woman's home Sunday morning.

Hopping mad fat boy skips to one-legged victory

NARA -- An obese youth who sprained his ankle while doing weight loss exercises has successfully sued a Nara hospital for ordering him to do them. The court ruled that a fitness coach was at fault for the obese boy's injury. The state, which runs the Nishinara National Hospital where the 13-year-old took part in a weight control program, was ordered to pay 200,000 yen in damages Thursday.

"For an obese boy like him it was hard enough to skip rope in a normal fashion. So it is not difficult to imagine him injuring himself if forced to do it on one leg, as ordered by a hospital fitness coach," Presiding Judge Shoji Higuchi said at the Nara District Court. "The fitness coach should have given the boy more instruction on how to do the exercise as he is not really good at skipping rope."

In August 2000, the youth, who was a fifth-grade elementary school student at the time, spent 10 days at the hospital undergoing the weight loss program because he had developed a fatty liver due to obesity, the ruling read. However, he injured his right ankle while doing a number of exercises including a lot of skipping rope and running sessions. "The boy was forced to skip rope while standing on one leg many times against his will. Moreover, the fitness coach failed to make him to do warm-ups or to give necessary advice before skipping rope," a lawyer representing the obese youth told the court during a hearing.

A spokesman for the hospital hinted that it may appeal the ruling. "It is a shame that the court did not accept our side of the story. We'll study the ruling in order to determine our next course of action."

Man drives car through train station while chasing skirt

YAMAGATA -- A man who drove his car through a train station chasing a young woman who ignored his taunts was arrested here Tuesday, police said. Saito drove his car up the stairs during his pursuit of a young woman who ignored him. Masafumi Saito is accused of willful destruction of property after his recreational vehicle slammed into a handrail, destroying it. Nobody was injured in the incident, which the 20-year-old unemployed Saito admits to carrying out.

"When the woman ignored me, I thought I'd chase after her," he told the police, explaining his decision to drive his car into JR Yamagata Station. Police said Saito drove his car up a 20-meter-long flight of stairs, through a passage and then down another flight of stairs before heading away from the station. He turned himself into the Yamagata Police Station late Monday night. Witnesses said that Saito and a 21-year-old man riding beside him dropped off a pair of young women at the station before Saito yelled out something to another young woman who was walking by.

When the woman did not respond to Saito, he drove his car after her, following the woman for some time as she headed into the station building, which also contains a hotel and department store.
