I found this on Yahoo. Remember this guy from UFC 3?

I remember Yarborough, he got his ass kicked. There was another Sumo wrestler in one of the early UFCs; he also got his ass kicked.
Sumo sucks as a MA for self defence.

I saw this guy in a Sumo match...it was laughable. I don't think I saw any "technique" anywhere...

There was a documentary about their trip to the Basho a few years ago. A couple of them couldn't even compete because they were so badly hung over. It was pitifully funny.

Again, the UFC and self-defense are in two different worlds.
On the street, not a lot of people can actually do anything when a 400-pound man comes running. You can do what some of the people did which was use speed to your advantage and such, but street fights end up different. A sumo would concentrate more on grappling you and putting you to the ground and just laying there. Most wouldn't even need to cover the guy's hips... The guy is stuck anyway.
Against a much faster and a much more skilled person, yes, a relatively slow (sumos are not really slow, but slow compared to people who are known for their speed) sumo will get dominated by a faster and smarter opponent 99% of the time on the mat. On the streets, you can just use your speed to kick him in the balls or something, but again, things are a bit diffferent. Or, places where you are limited in moving side to side or at an angle, then you are in trouble.
Shut up about the **** street aspects ok? We all know you've never been in a fight MartialArtist.
I guarentee that the top 5 UFC fighters or for the matter of fact the top 25 contact fighters in any sport would easily be ready to handle themselves against the average joe.
No I am not talking about if the other guy had a gun or a knife.

Well duh!
I don't think you'll find anyone who'll disagree with the top 5 NHB fighters being able to beat up the average person.
SIGH
Yarborough thought he would be a top sumo tori because of his size. The Japanese loved him because of his size. He is in two Japanese movies that he cameos. I have one and he gets cut in half with a sword. He was the nice big lovable PACHINCO. THEN he stepped in the ring.............

martial artist that isn't true, an MMAist would be more trhna ready than any of MAists from the MAs you're thinking about in a street fight. MMA, and all the apsects/ systems which make up MA are better, and the best for hand to hand self defence, as well as the ring.
