I see guys mess this choke up alot.Same as with many chokes guys just lock it on and squeeze.Don't.Think of the arm that is going around him as a rope.Keep your muscles loose. Now get it as deep as you can.The bicep should be very deeply into the neck BEFORE you squeeze. If possible go palm to palm prior to getting your hand on your bicep.Once palm to palm you can pull the encircling arm deeply through. It takes up the slack. After you roll over think about trying to keep him as flat as can be.Keep his shoulderblades on the floor as you get to your knee's.Realise that as he is flat you are trying to BEND his neck.
In a variation you can stay palm to palm and use your forearm to pop his elbow inward. This known to good wrestlers as a way to break a guy down.It will tapple him to his back.Stay palm to palm and backarch into mount.Very powerful choke.

Great advice. I am regularly pulling this choke off in sparring. I have found oftentimes I do not need to roll in order to finish..

Love this choke we used to do it wrestling but called it a Russian Roll. Choking a guy to tech is great. I find this choke harder to get with a gi on but giless its money.

One key picture I see missing is the actual roll. I almost think Nog left this one out on purpose.

When you lock on the choke you want to dive your head inside and underneath your opponent as much as possible. Sometimes I see people just rest their head against the guys back and roll. What ends up happening is they get their face smashed, and loosen the choke somewhat struggling to get them over off your face.

The second key point is to keep turning like all hell. Sometimes you rotate so you face them when you are both on your side. Lock up a leg in a sort of half guard to limit the guy from being able to move around. If they have their legs free and can squirm they can release some pressure by rolling.

This is a slow choke. All arm triangles can be 'fought' a little bit since you are really only shutting down one side of the neck hard. Ideally you clamp it on so tight that their other arm is helping the choke. But as theory and practice are often different you might need to hold this choke for a while. You might start thinking, this isnt working and let go. Mistake.

So you basically "dive" under the guys body in direction of your opposite side, as fast and as deep as possible, right?

Yes.

On a side note, one of our guys uses this choke all the time. Won his division at GQ with it and got it at his first tournament in AZ last year. He was only 16 at the time and a yellow belt. He won the teen division so we put him in the adult division. So funny....there was a purple belt wrestler who shot in and took him down a couple of times. He finally landed this choke and tapped the guy out in the finals. It was very awesome indeed.

I love this technique.

For me, this technique is great to work in with a guilotine. Get a guy pummeled down and start workign to get around his neck or grab his gi, he wants to get his hands in to break that choke up. All of a sudden my hand is working to get up under his arm pit rather than under his chin, he thinks it's fine, then- weeeeee. If nothing else a takedown.

Sometimes the choke is it's shown in that picture there just doesn't sink for me. Switch up the grip, keep spinning on him, get to mount and viola, mounted guilotine ^_^

If the changes they made to the gator roll are any sign, they will turn it into a kneebar and win the Pride GP with it.

You're just upset that BJJ invented grappling.

Incidently this is an extremely easy choke to defend. There is nothing keeping you from reaching your arm trapped inside(we'll say the right arm) down toward your legs as your left knee comes up near your face. Now you are grabbing your own hamstring and you can mulekick your leg straight. The powerful ass muscle contraction overpowers even a much stranger guys upperbody stretching your own deltoid inches from your neck.I've never had this escape work anything less than perfectly even on completely locked in anacondas.
