A senior citizen, local to the Las Vegas area, booked a hotel room and shot up a country/western concert, last night. From the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay, into a parking lot venue on the opposite side of the strip. Suspect was killed in the hotel, apparently while still shooting into the crowd. His "companion," was arrested at their home, and is being questioned.

Already, it's being called the worst mass-shooting in US history. Some accounts say he had an arsenal in the hotel, and that he was using a machine gun.

I just woke up late to this story.

I haven't counted, but if you listen to the video, above, he got at least 200 rounds off. 60 or so before the music stopped, a sustained 10-12 seconds of what sounds like fully-automatic fire.

Senior citizen? Wut? Terrorists tend to be young idiots with nothing to lose.

Edit: what the crap, it's a 64-year old chap named Stephen. Gonna be an interesting story behind this one.

There were pictures showing the hotel room in relation to the concert, it was an elevated position and I imagine it looked like shooting fish in a barrel...... Thoughts go out to the people impacted.

"More than 50 people were killed and over 200 injured when a "lone wolf" gunman opened fire on people attending a country music festival in Las Vegas, police said."
"Authorities ruled out terrorism" NPR and most other sources have reported. Which is kinda strange cause all the sources say motivations are "still unknown".

I am going to assume we are supposed to just write it off as the cost of living in a "free society".
The good news is God will make sure he is judged and punished or rewarded properly.

On second listen, that's pretty slow for a machine gun. It sounds to me like he was bump-firing an AR-15.

Someone in one of the videos (taking nearby fire) said the same thing minus the bump fire part. I am no expert but I agree. No short or long bursts or continuous fire.
The important part, I think we can all agree on, is that the gun was more than likely black and assaulty.

It's hard to tell due to the quality of the sound but I'd agree that is probably a bump-firing AR15 platform with a drum magazine of some sort. That's a **** lot of rounds he got down in one sitting plus a long pause between reloads/stoppages.

It could be a 5.56 felt fed system but unlikely.

Either way he's fucking nuts and this won't end well.

That's some crazy Charles Whitman type ****. Wonder if he had a brain tumour, CTE , or something as well. I'm sure more will be revealed in good time.

That's a sick number of casualties. Damn shame. First responders have no idea what to expect anymore.

Yeah I agree it would have to be a drum config of some sort. There are 100-round double-drums going for about $100, online. His initial cyclic rate was about 4 rounds per second, and the initial burst was at least 10 seconds sustained.

Heard on the radio, and alluded to here (http://live.reuters.com/Event/Las_Vegas_shooting_4), Paddock shot himself as police were breaching the hotel room.

(edit)

"What we know is once we arrived up there, we had isolated this individual to these two rooms," McMahill told CNN.

A SWAT team used explosives to get in the room "to confront the individual," he said.

"I cannot tell you that it was the police that shot him. He may have self-inflicted that gunshot wound," he said.

The shooter had at least eight guns. Police have found no prior criminal record besides a minor traffic infraction in Nevada.
