Has anyone ever used an armbar in a real fight(ie outside the ring/gym? How did it work out?

If you have position and control for an Armbar, Ground and Pound is probably better it lets you disengage more easily. Unless you mean a cool standing armbar after a throw like in Judo.

True...unless of course you decide to leave him crying with a mangled elbow...
I have used a few arm/wrist locks and twists but never on the ground, yet.

the idea is to pound him ... and when he reached up with his hands to push you off or block ....
armbar him ...

I used to bounce at a few bars and used standing arm bars all the time, but ya never go to the ground in a crowd if you can help it.

I always wondered about that... lets say you'r attacked, you take the guy down and get him in one of those armbars where your lying perpendicular to his body. What do you do then?

I used an armbar in a real fight once. I knew the guy who was trying to fight me though, so i didn't really wanna bloody him up or injure him too bad. He did a bad takedown attempt and ended up on his back with me in side control. I was basically trying to just hold him down til he calmed down. If I had really wanted to mess him up, I could have easily GnPed at this point. He seemed to calm down, so I was letting him up, and he started swinging, so I grabbed him and armbarred him, putting enough pressure so that it really hurt but didn't snap. THAT made him think twice about fighting.

So I suppose maybe it was only a halfway real fight. Because while the guy was trying (in vain) to swing at me, I wasn't really trying to hurt him. If I had been, there were several things I would have done first.

Used it once on an angry drunk Mexican dude at a party who decided to tackle me out front. He left an arm dangling with a drunken punch, and I grabbed it from the bottom and laid him down. He didn't know wtf was going on...
So Crash, did you break his arm? What happened next?
That would be a fight ender in most situations, I'd hope. I can see myself using it as a sweep from guard, one of my favs if the guy has taken me down and is throwing from guard(in training I mean).
Otherwise though, If I was in mount I'd stay there for GnP.

i was wondering this myself the other day, since armbars don't seem to me to be the most vicious possible joint manipulation, and because they require you to be in a position that is, in my opinion, possibly the most vulnerable to a secondary attack, as fernando pointed out.
