View Full Version : Weapons / gladiator combat / Game of Thrones how realistic?

Specifically watching the penultimate episode in season 5 with Mormont fighting in the pit with 5 other combatants, all with different weapons. There seemed to me to be a lot of spinning around exposing your back to your opponent which in MT anyway is (generally) a bad thing.

Is the sword fighting in GoT generally realistic? At least there not doing Matrix / Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon wire-work, but I'm genuinely curious who legitimate the fighting is?

Not sure if this is the right forum, so feel free to move it.

GoT fight scenes are mostly like haymaker Western bar fights with oversized swords. A real 2 handed sword doesn't require baseball bat followthrough swings. I feel like real swordfights used more jabbing and probing, or closing and grappling, rather than standing at medium range and trying to hit each other as hard as possible. Most people are afraid to stand and exchange when the only weapons are hands and feet, I doubt they'd be more brave when its sharp steel.

Matt Easton (Scholagladiatoria) does some nice breakdowns of the GOT (amongst others) fight scenes. Here's the one from the end of Season 5:

The smaller fight breakdowns are more useful I think though:

Yeah, actually I was looking for analysis of the gladiator style fighting from the prior episode. I'll see if I can find something else on the tubes.

Here's the actual fighting scene

Game of Thrones Fight Scenes, as with all Filmed Fight Scenes, lack realism because the untrained audience does not want realism. Moves are overly dramatic and telegraphed so as to provide the audience with a clear view of the action. If you watch a realistic sword fight between masters of the art you pretty much need a trained eye or slow motion replays to even be able to tell what happened.
