View Full Version : Peace has certainly favoured this rusty old sword

Some elderly relatives kept an old sword thing behind a radiator and don't know where it came from. It's about 3' or so I'd guess (I haven't measured it). The point is asymmetric, not sure if that just means it's broken. The sides look smooth near the base, I don't think that part was ever sharp. The groove bit down the middle has faded writing that seems to say "XXX AHTHOHIO XX PICHNIO XX" (the "H"'s maybe look a bit like N's but not like the actual "N" near the end. Possibly whoever engraved it was picking up the wrong letter).

Does anyone have any idea how old it is likely to be or where I could ascertain out a little more about it?

Those pictures have a distinct lack of pixels.
If you can take or post some higher res photos I think you will get more accurate responses.
I have no idea what the third picture is.

Sorry the third picture was to illustrate the shape of the tip, I couldn't get my phone camera to focus on that instead of the wallpaper.
I don't know why they all came out so small, here are larger photos:

I'll do some digging because I'm curious too. The handle is clearly for two handed use but it looks pretty specialized for thrusting which is unusual. It could also be a training sword but I've never seen one with this design and it looks far too pointy.

Can you give us the stats?

Weight, blade length, overall length, width and thickness at the base of the blade.

But we're rapidly exhausting my <ahem> "expertise" on rapiers.

Peace favor your sword,

I'll get a chance to go back in a couple weeks and measure it then, hopefully weigh it also. Do you think it would have had a sort of stopper on the end at one time?
