First post here, noob to bullshido. I'm looking for A TKD school in the San Diego area. Straight to the point, I'm looking to further my skills, learn and advance quickly. Can anyone lay down some knowledge?

Welcome to Bullshido. What are your martial arts goals? Why pick TKD?

Pretty much that. You have Saulo Riberio's jiu jitsu university in San Diego. Why **** with tkd?

There's really all sorts of martial arts choices. Top quality BJJ, Olympic level judo, FMAs that've been taught in SD by their founding families for decades, a mountain aikido dojo run by a professional defensive tactics teacher/former LEO, capoeira on the beach and college campus featuring hot girls, lots of cool options out there.

The TKD dojangs I'm familiar with, on the other hand, I'd describe as mediocre. They spend so much time basically doing daycare for kids, that they end up treating the adults like children too. Most time is spent punching and kicking the air, doing unrealistic blocks, dumb demo team stuff, fancy kicks that lack any power, mediocre multi--step self defense techniques, kata taught and drilled without applications, and very restricted sparring. They even seemed to all have really weak, indifferent kiai (kihap?). A cousin of mine got a TKD black belt as a young teen, and when she started kung fu (at the school I used to train at), she felt like TKD didn't prepare her very well for sparring, or even striking with proper emphasis on what the whole body is doing. It was a step up from her TKD training, but I had already left that better kung fu school, because I felt like it was falling into a lot of the same traps.

North County Fight Club used to host Bullshido throwdowns. Not sure if they're still around or not.
