Between the time when the oceans drank Atlantis, and the rise of the sons of Aryas, there was an aged undreamed of. And onto this, came Squats; destined to wear the jeweled crown of Badassonia upon a vein-bulging brow.

But seriously, how many of you are actually including squats in your weekly gym regimens? If you don't, how do you ever expect to hit someone hard enough to make them actually respect you as a human being? How do you expect to shoot a successful double leg on anyone who isn't a drunk or Aikidoka? How do you expect to walk away with your lunch money when you meet this 6th grade girl in a dark alley?

Leg strength is the foundation of virtually every combative activity. And it says in the bible - "Verily if you build your house upon tiny stilts it will assuredly fall and you will be laughed at by the the daughters of the tribes of Sparta where they actually do squats and thereby reap many bitches from the fields and nightclub districts" - or something like that.

Squats are my favourite exercise. I believe happiness comes from the legs and therefore it is important to have strong legs.

The squat is by far one of the best lifting exercises one can do to build strength in numerous areas. Legs + Core = majority of your power.

I picked up the third edition of Rippetoe's "Starting Strength" in Kindle format a few days ago. It's the best training book I own-and I own quite a few. Very, very highly recommended. I particularly like the explanations of the mechanics and anatomy of the exercises. The book actually induced me to change my back squat form and do more back squats versus front squats.

Do I hold that possition untill I can't take it any more, or am I suposed to do squats while tucked up like that?

It's not remotely the same thing. Sandbags are the best dirt cheap commonly available alternative (pun intended).

sand bag (as already mentioned) or maybe you could do dumbbell work instead if you don't have room for a barbelll and a squat rack.

i use a barbell for deadlifts, but since i don't have a squat rack, i use dumbbells for squats (bench press too, as i don't have a spotter.) right now my biggest issue is getting the dumbbells up to my shoulders, as the weight of dumbbells that i can load onto my shoulders are not really heavy enough to give me a hard time squatting (this should change as my upper body strength improves.)

I don't have enough dumbell weight to realy make a difference and I really don't need large snadbags in my life and stuff.

But I do have a girlfriend that weighs in @ 120lbs. I might just have her jump up on my back for a few sets...

Start by trying to hold it for a minute, then add minutes. It takes time to work up endurance for this exercise.
