Li Fuyan underwent surgery after complaining about severe headaches, bad breath and breathing difficulties. Unknown to him at the time, the cause of his problems was a knife blade that had been lodged in his head when a mugger stabbed him under the jaw with the four inch blade during a mugging. That was four years before he sought treatment.
One doctor described the case as a miracle. There was no scar or entry wound to be found, and the blade was badly corroded from sitting in a warm, wet environment for four years.
As martial artists, we always see testimony and instruction out there about facing a knife wielding threat, and a lot of people represent their own brands of dogma about what happens when metal edges meet flesh. Stories like this are a reminder that the real world doesn't always play by predictable rules.
