So as you can see from my style field, I do JJJ. This year we've really been pushing for more alive training (we're a university club, so it's run by students and not by the coach). Apparently our wish has been granted. Two whole weeks of Sport Jujitsu, with our coach basically letting us go as hard as we want, with more later on in the term. I think we're gonna do some groundwork next week. I'm so happy.

Any other TMAers had success in introducing more alive training at your clubs?

Congrats on making a uni TMA club that actually hits people!

Tell me about it, even the MT guys hardly ever spar, and yet somehow always dominate the other unis they compete with, which means that it must be even worse elsewhere.

Has your coach actually ever done any proper sparring? Does he know how to safely run a sparring session? Do you have the correct safety gear for striking sparring?

I mean getting shitty JJJ, 90% of JJJ is ****, to actually spar is great, because it will help with realism. However, throwing a bunch of people who've only ever trained shitty JJJ into a sparring situation without proper supervision or equipment means a tard-fest and people getting hurt.

Yeah he used to kickbox so he knows how to strike decently. Though I will admit the gear isn't as good as it could be. We've got 12oz gloves, headgear, pretty thin shin pads and dipped foam foot-pads. It's not that much of a problem since most of the guys training don't want to go too hard, and those who do (me and two other guys) have had some outside striking experience.

I'm currently at college too and my school has a few clubs I'm interested in. But I don't know if they cost anything or not (kind of on a budget at the moment). Hopefully I can get a hold of the clubs and see what they've got. MAYBE it'll be free :D

That sucks your university is so lame about allowing contact in martial arts. I spent five hellish years with the Penn State Judo team wishing we did LESS randori.

PSU Coach Oishi could make the Bataan Death March look like a Boy Scout day hike.

Yeah Judo always seems to be the exception, though it's not so much my university as JJJ in general. That said, the uni won't allow us to set up a boxing club for love nor money (too violent apparently??).

A university without a boxing club is just sucky. Seriously sucky.

Try making the point that your uni has probably had a boxing club in its past, and that it is significantly less dangerous and violent than rugby.

Yeah a university not allowing a boxing club is pretty ****. My unis boxing club hosted their first amateur fight night a few weeks ago, it was a big success! Our boxing clubs been around for ages and so has our rugby club, I've heard of FAR more injurys from rugby (and even football), and im talking broken bones, concussions and knockouts, the full works :p

It's nice that the op's uni jjj club goes to the next level, but for the love of God, make sure everyone buys proper safety equipment, if they want to go full on or not.
12 oz gloves?
14oz gloves.

good proper shinguards, groin guard and MOUTHguards.
the bill of a broken tooth is MUCH higher than the bill of a broken nose, at least over here it is.

equipment standards should be standardised and not depending on what each individual intends to go do.

Also i'm pretty sure once you'll spar you'll be shocked with just how useless JJJ is.

This.

My cousin got his tooth booted out of his mouth trying to save a friend from a beating by a group of drunken 'travellers'. The quote to get another tooth screwed in topped £2000, although I'm sure you can get less stable repairs for significantly less money.

I've also accidentally kicked a tooth right out of a guy's mouth in sparring because the fool didn't wear a mouthguard.

If you don't wear a mouth guard in sparring - you fail the natural selection test.

Same thing happened to a friend of mine in south east london. Same quote aswell, he's decided to live without the tooth :/

You can get it done on the NHS but the waiting list is epic, missing a tooth for three months sucks balls.

Op, it's good that most of the class don't want to go hard yet but you can guarantee there will be some serious spazzing and overcompensating with power due to inexperience. It might be prudent if you and the other guys that have sparred hard before mix with the fresher students to keep things calm. Even with good intentions newbs often freak out when hit for the first time.

I';m glad you guys are confirming this cos no-one ever listens to my good advice.
Sure I'm banned from most southern european countries and rural areas, but that doesnt mean im clueless about these other things.

Say, who likes to know what submission hold works best to keep a sheep or a small horse in one place?
