One of the greatest swordsman of all time and a contemporary of Miyamoto Musashi.
Yagyu Munenori ( 1571-1646) was educated and deadly.
He held the prestigious position as kenjutsu instructor to the Tokugawa family.
The "creator" of Yagu-shinkage ryu kenjutsu.
Whereas Musashi started out a spoor and an outcast and clawed his way to the "top", Munenori was born into the higher society.
Nevertheless, he EARNED his reputation as great master/instructor and in one famous duel, during the battle for Sekigahara, he killed 7 armed samurai while defending the soon to be Shogun.
Goes goes to show that the cream of the crop can came from anywhere, low born trouble makers and high born potential brats.
Hi book: The Way of the Living Sword is a must.

takuan soho's letters to yagyu munenori led to my rediscovery of buddhism. lesser vehicle background reading and then the platform sutra of hui-neng were what consolidated it.

This is the version of Book of Five Rings I own. It's got "The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War" included. It was actually a very contrasting read after Musashi. Shambhala is probably the best for book translations, as some of the other versions become very biased. Kinda disappointed that I found this book in the business section though.

You can get this book from Amazon , of course.
I've also seen a copy of the Yagyu book in Barnes & Noble and Borders.
