Choc topped: Mundine KO'd by hard Wood

GARTH WOOD controversially floored Anthony Mundine in the fifth round of their fight at Acer Arena last night to score one of the biggest upsets in Australian boxing history.

It had been an ugly fight, dominated by complaints from Mundine about Wood's wrestling tactics and blows to the back of the head, but when the three-time world champion fell to the canvas 58 seconds into the fifth round there was stunned silence among the big crowd. It appeared that a blow to the back of the head sent Mundine to the canvas.

A jubilant Wood, who earned the right to fight Mundine by winning The Contender reality television boxing show, jumped around the ring in joy and later paid tribute to ''The Man''.

''If it wasn't for him, I never would have got the knock on the door, I never would have got the chance,'' Wood said. ''I am the best kept secret but you're all aware of it now. It was hard to get hold of Anthony - he was aware of my talent. When I saw the chance for the left hook, I landed it.''

Mundine admitted he was not sure how the loss - only his second defeat by knockout in 44 fights - would affect his future plans.

''I got caught but it is about how you bounce back. He is tough and all credit to him,'' he said. ''We've got to go back to the drawing board and go from there. Congratulations to Garth, good luck to him.''

Among those who witnessed the shock result were Australian Test candidate Phillip Hughes, All Blacks superstar Sonny Bill Williams, Kiwis captain Benji Marshall and his Wests Tigers teammates Lote Tuqiri, Bryce Gibbs, Chris Heighington and Tim Moltzen, GWS Giants AFL convert Israel Folau, Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith and advertising guru John Singleton.

The fight began with Mundine trying to maintain enough distance to prevent Wood from grappling with him but staying close enough to make contact through his superior glove speed.

Mundine, who had raised concerns about Wood's wrestling tactics on the eve of the fight, repeatedly complained to referee Les Fear about his opponent holding and grabbing but it was The Man who received the first caution after dropping the former South Sydney fullback at the end of the second round.

Wood began bleeding from a cut near his left eye in the third round but there were few clean punches landed as Fear had to repeatedly stop the fight to pull the pair apart.

Before the loss, Mundine had been targeting a fight with WBA light-middleweight champion Rigoberto Alvarez early next year.

According to boxing websites, it was reported in Mexico after Alvarez's scheduled title defence against No.1 contender Austin Trout failed to eventuate last weekend that Mundine's management had made inquiries about him fighting the three-time world champion in Australia.

In the main preliminary bouts, former IBO featherweight champion Billy Dib took another step towards his next world title shot with a sixth round stoppage of tough Queenslander Mick Shaw and Victorian-based Johannes Mwetupunga beat regular Mundine sparring partner Peter Mitrevski to retain the Australian middleweight belt.

Meanwhile, Kostya Tszyu is elated at being chosen for the International Boxing Hall of Fame to make up a heavy-hitting 2010 induction trio with Mike Tyson and Julio Cesar Chavez. The recognition comes just five years after Tszyu's last fight - despite his reluctance to confirm retirement - and is reward for a career that saw him rule the world's junior-welterweight ranks for almost half a decade.

I wrote a whole article on this topic last night and the computer decided it didn't like it and so deleted it, among other things, out of protest. Personally, I thought it was a good piece, but my computer seems to be in charge.

Anyway, Anthony "Choc" Mundine is an Aboriginal former professional Rugby League player turned pro boxer in the footsteps of his father. He is a loud mouthed arrogant sumbitch who has been accused in the past (by me) of fighting opponents made out of wood. Last night he fought an opponent named Wood. Apt, I thought, because that is the type of witty human being I am.

Garth Wood, or Woodoe, as he is known by this journalist and no one else, won The Contender series and with it the right to face "The Man" (Choc's other self bestowed title) in a bout. Unfortunately for "The Choc Man", another title recently bestowed but this time by me, Wood turned out to be anything but his namesake.

After accusing Wood of wrestling several times leading into and during the fight, in the fifth round, 59 seconds in, Wood cracked Mundine and dropped him so hard Mundine decided a rendezvous with the floor and wobbly two step as he rose was a good idea in front of the ref, judges and all in the middle of a regulated boxing match. It was awesome.

Many people hate Choc and truthfully I was one of them. If he wasn't doing a bad impression of Cassius Clay's cockiness before a fight, he was doing an even worse impression if he won and the true measure of his douchiness was apparent in his discussion and opinion regarding women, which, due to his Islamic faith, is not exactly congruent to Western civilisation's mainstream. Unfortunately I had the misfortune of seeing Choc interact with the blubber butts of The Biggest Loser and I was impressed with his willingness to empower, inspire and motivate those immensely overweight individuals without resorting to my tactics of standing over them with a Big Mac, cheeseburger and thickshake, zapping them with a TAZER every time I caught them even thinking about glimpsing in the general direction of the food. Granted, they were just wrappers (I'd eaten them earlier), I had nothing to do with the show and those TAZER guns run out of charge pretty quick, which isn't a problem because those tubby bastards can barely walk a half mile, let alone chase someone down. If they did they'd be too buggered to do anything about it. But I digress...

Choc pissed me off because until I saw that I was a card carrying member of "Mundine is a Narrow Minded Prick who hasn't fought anyone of note ever because he is a douche" brigade.

Anyway, heaps of people over here are cheering, just check out the comments section.

Having watched this fight just now, Wood is an awful boxer, or at least he looked awful in that fight.

I get that everyone hates the other guy, but if that ref had been on the ball the fight would probably not have gone that way.

That being said, he's obviously got power so under a good coach he could probably be a real force. Reminds me tactically of an undeveloped Ricky Hatton.

It was mentioned by a few of my friends that those ropes were sloppy as hell and that set up favors a brawler.

Do people think that is the case here?

Thanks for this. I'll try to get to a PC somewhere, sometime that has this Flash thingummyjig.

Mundine, 3 x World Champ? Occasionally he crops up in (UK) Boxing News - usually as a footnote, though I do recall him being KO'd a long time ago. I think he was an Aussie Rules player who felt the call of the Ring 'cos of his dad Tony (who I also recall).

Seriously doubt his "World" credential, though I could be wrong...

rugby. But Same difference. mostly he gets complaints for doing easy fights. I think he thought this one was going to be too.

On the plus side he did not keep on with his rap career.YouTube - Anthony Mundine Feat Kyte Kutter, Bambino & August (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziznnFbtuxs)

It was a seriously ugly fight.

I dont know about wood. I can never tell munty boxers skill level from just waching them. Sometimes their weird crap style is their biggest advantage.
