Sonotone Corporation was one of the first companies to develop hearing aids. The first electronic hearing aids were large, heavy and used tubes. The picture at the left shows three early model Sonotone hearing aids. The black hearing aid at the left requires an external battery pack, which is often in a separate container that can be worn strapped around the chest or waist. These were made in the 1940's.

So if that is a hearing aid, then the time traveler traveled from 1940 to 1928? Maybe that time machine only went backwards, otherwise they could have went into the future and picked up a smaller hearing aid.

THOSE were invented after the film was taken but there were hearing aids before that. If nothing else, people had been using cones and horns as hearing aids for quite some time.

That said, this is all pretty nutty - she was probably just messing with her hat or glasses, or an ear-ring.

I actually sent an e-mail to the George Noory Coast to Coast AM show. (It's a haven for conspiracy theories and general woo-woo)

I detailed the hearing aid theory and a link to the picture Cassius put up. I doubt that it will ever get on the airwaves.

I found out who the "mystery time traveler" really is.

How 'bout one of these?
Siemens 1924 hearing aid (http://hearing.siemens.com/sg/10-about-us/01-our-history/milestones.jsp?year=1924)

Yes, I was curious why everyone skipped this post.

Crazier still is there is a patent for electronic hearing aids, not produced, from the 1890's.

I think this is the only logical explanation for what's going on in the Chapman film.

P.S. People in one of my classes were randomly talking about the Chapman video today, I guess it's becoming widespread.

thats crazy, i remember seeing it on the yahoo news feed. maybe just a coincidence that a person is holding something other than a phone to their face?

Coincidence? Right. Before the invention of cell phones no one had a reason to have their hands anywhere above their shoulders.

It wasn't actually in 'The Circus' but footage from the premiere, as seen in the special features of a Chaplin DVD by this Irish indie filmmaker.

... and now that Irish indie filmmaker has had himself and posters for two of his movies seen by over 3,154,000 YouTube viewers, not to mention the TV coverage, massive online discussion, etc. I think he's a very clever indie filmmaker indeed.

BTW - http://www.hearingaidmuseum.com/gallery/Carbon/WesternElectric/info/westelect34a.htm - a hearing aid available from 1925.

Let's say I give it credit and it IS a time traveler. Her cell phone wouldn't work anyway. There weren't any satellites or carrier towers or VOIP servers or operators or anything that would support a text message, much less a full on phone call. She wouldn't even be using the damned thing.

Who would he/she be talking to? A mobile phone is one thing but to be using it is some achievement. So even if you are a timetraveller (yeah, riiight) how did you also set up a network?

If I'm not mistaken, radio communication was accessible around that time period, but I don't think it was in a handheld form. A cell phone is ridiculous due to the satellite and tower network necessary.

Do you ever read threads before you post in them, Sirc?

Lets just stop and say she is a time traveler
May it just be possible that her communication device may not need these things? Maybe there is a tiny singularity in their that maintains a permanent time bridge to where she is from and is thus sending any radio signals through that.
But this of course is all crazy talk time travel doesn't exisit what we have here my friends is an Alien who was visiting us in the 1920s talking to her mother ship with her communicator.
