I've started keeping a Pen & Paper training log but i wanna post a quick thing because I'm bored.

I finally joined a boxing gym a few weeks ago. Pacific Ring Sports is the new place I goto when I want to sweat a lot. So far I've only taken the Boxing classes but they also do Muay Thai and MMA. I like it a lot and after a few months of regular classes I can take the sparring class. I can't wait!

This is my Martial Arts schedule for the week, hopefully my work schedule won't interfere at I can keep it like this:

starting a combination

Oh man so I was late for the first time ever. Getting used to doing Judo in the morning won't be easy, I'm not a morning person. Anyway coach starts us off doing a combination where we start the Ouchi Gari throw up to where we get the guys leg off the ground and he starts hopping. At this point either we disengage or the other person gets his leg free and we then plant that forward foot down on the floor between his legs and lean forward on it. He emphasised us putting all our weight on this foot. Now a reverse pivot is done to put us in position to do the new throw, Hane Goshi that we started on monday. It's a cool transition and I'm glad we practiced it a lot.

Seventh Technique

Judo started up again today. I'm taking the morning class this semester. Way more students in the morning, it's a little intimidating. I recognized one other person there who took the night class with me last semester.

So while coach is getting the new people started on the correct way to fall, he shows us "Advanced" people (students who have taken the class at least once before) our new throw, Hane Goshi, Spring Hip Throw. I got partnered up with a small girl and didn't have too much trouble getting the motions down on her. The coach had a experienced student go around and help people. After he gave us a quick talking-to about pulling the person in while stepping in to pivot my partner had more success with the new throw.

Good Judo workout today

Today was pretty simple. Ran through our 6 throws 15 times each. After that went over the 4 pins. I am still really bad at Kata Gatame. Got a little practice on Kami Shiho Gatame which was good because they introduced that technique on the one day of class that I missed.

Randori was great today. Only two rounds but plenty of action. I tried being more aggressive and I think it helped a little. Instead of waiting for the other guy to try something and then doing some sort of counter/defense I tried moving/pushing/pulling the other guy a lot until it looked like I could make something work. Against the first guy I was able to get an Osoto Gari. We spent some time on the ground but he got me in a scarf hold and I couldn't move. Against the second guy I was real active in newaza and it was a lot of fun. Two things that I remember is locking one of his hands with my feet for what felt like forever but was probably three seconds, and another was doing a leg sweep on him that resulted in him falling right on me.

Week of Judo

Had class Monday but didn't blog about it. We went over chokes on that day. First we did the uchikoma drill on our 6 throws. Coach then showed the "Naked Hand Choke". You got to get behind the person and bring your wrist up under the other side of his neck then position your other hand up close against his neck also. After that get your shoulder behind his head and do a motion like Kata Gatame. The second choke was "Sliding Lapel Choke" and it also needs you to be behind the person. You get your hands up around his neck and grab onto the Gi. Then you kinda just extend your arms out in a scissors motion and it will choke him. I do not remember the name of the last one but you are on your back and the other guy has top position. Then you get your hands in a position similar to Sliding Lapel Choke and tighten your hands toward each other while pulling him down onto your chest.

First day of Ne Waza

As soon as the normal warm-ups and stretching was done we partnered up and got right down to Ne Waza basics. First thing coach showed us was Kesa Gatame or Scarf Hold. If you were doing the pin then you had to keep the bottom guy from wrapping his legs around your back leg. Under Judo rules if he gets a solid lock on your leg with both of his legs then the Kesa Gatame is considered broken and you will be stood up. It was pretty hard for me to get my legs around that way. You just kinda end up going in a circle for a while trying to catch up to the other guys legs. I think it's a better idea to try to roll the guy over and try to make something work from there. I was able to get my arm free a few times but it didn't help as much as I though it would. The person on top can put a lot of weight on you and its not easy to move someone from that position using just your arms. I was able to curl up around him and bring my legs up from behind his head and mess with him for a bit but nothing really came of it.

starting training with resistance

Okay I wrote this a week ago but did a smart thing and published it as a story instead of a blog so here it is done right.

I've done Aikido for a year and a half, Bok-Fu for three months over the summer, and so far no one has ever fought back. Today in Judo we did Randori with resistance and it was pretty damn awesome.

We started off by learning a new throw, Tai Otoshi. After practicing it a few times we paired up and drilled all 5 throws 10 times, throwing on the last. Doing the Seionage throws felt better today so hopefully I'm getting it down.

Sweated alot

Good workout in Judo today. Started off with some speed drills. Coach gives us a set amount of time and we have to go in for the throw as many times as possible and throw on the last one. It's hard to keep the energy going, even harder to get the technique right. When doing Osoto Gari I kept not stepping far enough behind the person so I'll have to remember that for next time. We did the speed thing about 8 times. Then we lined up and did a half-step drill on Tai Otoshi. Slide twice then throw, do it till you hit the wall, then your partner does it until you get back to the first wall. Have to go back and forth 5 times. Man was I tired.

Learning Yonkyo

Had Aikido this morning. We started with some Tai No Henko stuff. I like that move because you can pretty much just joke around with your partner while doing it. We worked some projections off it for a while. Then we got into some wrist twisting that has an Shomenuchi opening. The first one involved getting the persons arm to be perpendicular to the floor and then cranking it so that they start to walk backwards to relieve the pressure. The beginners I was practicing with were really afraid of putting too much pressure on the crank and that made the practice kinda boring. Sensei used me as uke a few times to demonstrate this technique and she cranks it on like crazy. It can be hard to get the newer students to understand that I want it to hurt a little and will let them know when to stop. I think this twist was called Nikyo but I am not positive.

Learning new throw
Submitted by Sevengraff on Wednesday, September 26, 2007 - 23:28

Judo was tonight. Started off learning Ouchi Gari or "Major Inner Reaping Throw". My biggest problem with this one is keeping my body facing forward. I keep on facing to the left because of how you enter in and bring the left foot so far up. Like the Osoto Gari throw it can have a real hard landing because you don't get to use your legs in the fall. Also on this one the person who throws you will almost always land on you. While a parter practiced the throw on me I fell and didn't flatten my right leg out on the mat so he fell on my knee. Bad times.
